regular LED lights vs LED grow lights?

submitted by AugustineOfHippo2 to AskUpgoat 2.8 yearsJul 29, 2022 15:14:23 ago (+4/-0)     (AskUpgoat)

thinkin of an indoor garden this winter (lettuce, spinach, kale, carrots).
is it really worth the expense to get grow lights?
how much difference will there be between plain LED lights and LED grow lights?

Proper grow lights include both infrared and ultraviolet emitters. Whether you need either of those features for the specific crops you're growing depends on the plant, but some of them require it to signal them to start flowering, etc.

Newegg occasionally has big percentages off on large grow light fixtures. No idea when they'll come back on sale. Check the "Shell Shocker" sale list daily.

Thanks.

I like using grow lights for my indoor garden. While most plants will grow when you stick them in front of the window, it does make them curve to the light. The stem curvature makes harvesting kind of annoying, and not to mention that the sunlight they get from the window won't always be consistent. Historically, I have had the best results with using grow lights.

With the built in timers that most LED grow lights have these days, it ensures that your plants get an exact/consistent amount of light. Sure, some of them do put off a small amount of heat, but nothing really to worry about. If you're using fans to add circulation to help prevent mold, even a tiny fan would likely mitigate it (assuming it's just a small/personal set up).

There is a big difference, not used them on plants though. If you are shopping around pet stores have them in the reptile section, not sure if they are cheaper, the same or more expensive.

The main difference I've noticed is how much more the 'grow' LED lights are compared to others. Haven't actually tried using them, so I can't say more than that. We still use old full-spectrum incandescents for reptiles, for the heat. Not that they really need extra heat in this weather...

Grow lights aren't special. They are just red and blue LEDs.

Plants look green because they reflect green light. So, green light isn't used in photosynthesis. Every watt you spend on green light is wasted energy.

Eventually, that light is going to convert into heat and you are going to have to spend even more energy cooling everything down.

White light is all colors including green. So, white LEDs are wasting energy / creating heat.

Hps will still yield greater lumens/m^2
Led are best price per watt

Leds are somewhat cooler as well if you are growing in a tent

Leds will give you a lower yield than HPS, but you can more than offset that loss by using aeroponics. I grew huge buds with my small setup.
I have full spectrum grow lights. Viparspectre 300w
