It was always a bad idea, democracy of any kind is the worst.
The more democratic elements in your system of rule, the more quickly things will hasten towards the terrible end.
Systems with less democratic elements or which are more restrained with them, like the USA, are only able to prolong the time until the complete collapse is upon them.
The solution is not rule of people, but neither is monarchy or dictatorship a viable answer, the only viable government is one that is ruled by rules themselves.
There are a set of rules, and no one may change them, only enforce or observe them.
That's the only answer, find the best system of rules for your nation, and then forbid anyone to make any sort of change to those rules.
This is what libertarianism does with the non aggression principle, the NAP is the basis for a set of laws that may not be added to or removed from or changed in any way or ignored or enforced in some arbitrary or inconsistent manner.
There are appropriate times for different models, as we clearly saw with the third Reich, but we never got to see them after winning the war showing how they were going to change systems.
Inb4 herrrrr it musss go directly to democracy and derpity derp I'm a fag
We don't know what momentum they had going and where it would lead. It was pretty obvious that they had the interest of the people at heart and weren't after money or power for the sake of it like Americans today or most other authoritarians
