It's less about what's true, and more about what is most beneficial for us to believe.

This is one of the reasons why those who don't eat the marshmallows turn out to be successful and of a libertarian/nationalist political orientation.

They can hold off the drive to immediate personal benefit in the name of a more rational and future oriented approach.

The marshmallow eaters often turn out less successful and are most often of a liberal progressive type of political orientation.

Their decisions are more animal like, they are easily affected by their immediate surroundings, replace the marshmallow with the need for social validation, and you have the model for why they are such conformists.
