Is there a solid reason managers typically are not someone from the ranks of people they're managing? for example, why don't welders or skilled laborers made into managers for those jobs?

I rarely ever see this happen. I had 1 skilled labor job with a lead that really knew about the job inside and out; he even thought the engineering teams stuff on several occasions. And I was told 2 clowns that were supervisors there were former skilled laborers, but I have my doubts given how much they avoided coming anywhere near the work area and how dumb (no hyberbole) they, consistently, acted and spoke (regularly explaining directions incorrectly or given known false information).

None of my software dev jobs had former software devs as bosses or leads - instead giving the management jobs to hotel management degree holders who hacked some code together (with insurmountable technical debt) or diversity hires (who obviously didn't know the job).

Is there a value-generating reason for this?

Simple...you need people who know what's going on in the field...95% of management is diverses hire to which companies get government subsidies...dumb as shit and smart as a nigger or teepee rat.

I've been welding for over 20 years with over 5 years as a CWI doing on the job inspections for pipe, pressure vessels, structural and nuclear. I’m also an expert dimensional and mechanical inspector certified in GD&T. I am a level 2 in countless NDE processes, including ultrasound and xray. I’ve trained aerospace engineers in the use and interpretation of CMM’s and their results. I currently supervise a small fab shop. And I couldn’t be happier. I’m 34.

Because HR fucking sucks and makes everything worse.

Also, because people that do stuff want to keep doing stuff instead of getting promoted out of doing stuff. This just happened to my boss, and now he's pushing to make it happen to me as well. Misery loves company... but I'm negotiating for a real pay raise, so if it works out, it'll work out.

Real pay raises come from quitting and going to a new job. I'm on the cusp of a +10 an hour pay raise if I get an offer for this new job

Yeah, I'm just resisting getting a new job, for some stupid reason.

Grats, if that is an adequate raise for you in your opinion.

Companies always hire the most narcissistic toxic assholes they can find!

Why?

Because most senior managers are psychopaths themselves and will always prioritize hiring other psychopaths that will gaslight, gatekeep, rob, abuse and back them up over doing a good job.

They put their own power and influence first at the expense of everything else.

That's why they have no problem playing the woke games that enable the diversity hire bullshit, covid tyranny, metoo and any other current thing that allows more narcissistic abuse to be pushed on the employees.

That's why companies are struggling to make profits, retain productive staff and keep their customers happy.

The problems all stem from having psychopaths in management positions putting their narcissistic abuse games first above all else.

1. personality
the people hiring the managers will look for those they feel have the "correct" personality needed to be a manager.

2. language
the people hiring the manager usually speak a specific "language", using specific key words and phrases. if you don't know the "language" of management, then they will think you are unqualified, regardless of your knowledge of the business at hand.

3. value
if you are a good grunt worker, you make them money. they don't want to lose that, and so refrain from promoting you too fast or too far.

This exactly. I worked with a guy who started fixing cnc machines when he was 15. 40 years later he is the manager. But he doesn't have people skills. He knows everything about the field but he doesn't know how to manage properly.

I see it a lot in my field as well. Turns out you need people skills to lead groups of people into meeting company goals.
