I'm an aerodynamicist and went to school for psychology. Most of my work experience is on HVAC systems. I'm not even a licensed engineer. I'm also in a position where I can turn down work just because I don't like your shoes.
I would never hire you as an engineer for my airplane. When it crashes, everything gets looked at, and I say, "Well, yeah, my chief engineer has a psychology degree and no engineering license." And now I'm out billions in lawsuits. No thanks.
However, I need a replacement part created for an obsolete AC unit, and the tool and die guy says, give me a drawing, sure, i'll call you.
You build airplanes? If I told you where I've worked you'd never fly again :). The things I do, I do because, I'm good at it, personal pride, I'll just leave it at that.
Would you hire an engineer fresh out of college with no experience?
Yes. that way I can train them properly on how to do the job correctly (i.e., my way.) And they are hungry to learn, not lazy and stuck in their own ways.
Perhaps they chose to backpack across Europe or South America for 2 years. Perhaps they took care of elderly granparents or the family farm for 2 years. Perhaps they decided to get married and pop out a puppy first. Hence why you always ask about gaps in their CV.
Not totally true. Some companies put this info in company reports. The more degree holders is better advertising and valuation. I watched LexisNexis go from not caring to making it a thing because they wanted that number.
With the proper acct I can take your current address and in minutes tell you the name of the guy who lived across the street from you when you were ten. I can tell you his name and everyone who lived there. And a great deal more.
You will often hear the name dropped in police procedurals because it's just that ubiquitous in the legal and news and govt worlds.
In STEM the school work is the same as the job; although the business will have a particular nitch
Nothing I learned in either of the colleges was directly transferrable to a job. The most I got out of it was using the language and that would have happened with any usage of the language, so college doesn't get credit for that.

I would never hire an engineer without a degree, regardless of work experience. Too much liability.

If you are worried about getting a rotten apple from the barrel, you go instead to the tree.

Still dont get your point.
I am not going to hire an unlicensed engineer to build anything of any import because of liability reasons.

Then why did you give a list of reasons (implying there is a limited list of acceptable reasons) for not working for a period of time?
