How come Germans voted to discontinue their nuclear plants back in 2011?

submitted by fiskdisk to AskUpgoat 2.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 15:35:35 ago (+3/-0)     (AskUpgoat)

Came across an article stating that Germans overwhelmingly voted to discontinue their nuclear plants in April of 2011.

What gives, is this simply the fear of accidents?

Also, on a related note, anyone else notice that nuclear energy has all of a sudden become super popular among NPCs and common folk?

"Something something the technology is better now so it's totally safe".

I'm still undecided, they may be safer, but things can still go to shit in ways that safety analysts fail to predict. In this day and age, a nuclear plant would have to be designed to withstand war, riots and (((terrorists))), not just natural phenomenon.

It was due to the Fukushima accident that happened in Japan early 2011, and the scare tactics that were deployed.

I think you are right and yet that only deepens the mystery. Fukushima only happened because of a tsunami. A very big tsunami. The Japanese screwed up because they didn't build the sea walls around Fukushima tall enough to protect the power plant from a very big (but not unprecedented) tsunami.

Then the Germans, err, what exactly? Tsunami from the Baltic swamping coastal nuclear power plants? The Fukushima accident didn't reveal any risk that the Germans had to worry about.

They didn’t. Their overlords are just saying they did.

More than ever people are living in their own bubbles now.

Nobody understands the concept that industry takes lots and lots of power, because an average person has no clue what goes on outside of their bubble.

"I can totally handle a 6 hour blackout, why can't everybody?" kind of thing.

Just like the politicians that have probably never put gas in a car in their entire silver-spoon life saying that everyone should just get an electric car.

Many industries cannot handle blackouts and need MWs of electricity to keep running. An average person has no clue what that means and will vote however (((they))) tell them.

Why do you think voting exists? Think.

To prevent the peasants from beheading the king of France.

Coal plants put off more radiation than nuclear plants

During normal operation that may be true, idk. A catastrophe at a nuclear plant puts off more radiation than a bombed out coal plant.

What makes you think Germans voted for this? Elections are controlled. Have been for a very long time. Not exclusive to USA.
