That is if the initial heat flash doesn't catch is outside and vaporize us right away.

(There used to be a YouTube video called the day after in 8 minutes which basically summarized the whole thing with shots edited together in 8 minutes. That's been taken down unfortunately. But the good guy dies in the end with his hair loss and his cancers and everything else after all a month or two I guess. So that's what this question really is.

No you won't have any warning of the heat flash so if you're that close that you can be blinded by the heat flash it won't even be a choice. If it catches you outside and you're too close and you look your eyes will be fried your skin will be burning and falling off in a couple of days or you might just be vaporized in place and be only a shadow on the concrete like happened in hiroshima. But I'm talking about if you're far enough away that you can see the mushroom clouds are you going to be running for your bunker and hiding there and waiting for the inevitable destruction in your dirt hole are you going to stand up and look and take it all in.

I grew up during the cold war, kid. When the Ukraine-Russian war jumped off and the US began sending the Ukkies more weapons, I immediately said, "Nuclear annihilation, Let's GO!"

I supposed when the Russians deploy their nuclear arsenal I'll die dead instantly, having failed to secure a spot for myself in a state of the art vault, from vault-tec. Vaporized instantly within the effective kill-zone of the neutron pulse with my ashes blown away by blast wave if they hit the military bases, city, or nuclear power plants near my location while the rest of you will have to suffer through the irradiated horror of the post-apocalypse.

If I somehow possibly survive this, and I walk out to survey the nuclear devastation, since I will have my 9mm with me, I'll immediately remove myself. This is something I want no part of.

And my last thoughts will be, damn it, all of those nuclear war precautions I had to go through, and the TV shows and movies I saw with that particular scenario in the 60s ... fuck, they were right.

I do think the best reason to have a gun will be to off yourself at the time of your choosing to avoid a really bad ending. But if I was walking around and there was a dog or maybe a person or two and the radiation was falling out pretty far away and I knew it would take 6 months or a year to really spread completely over the continent hell I might go have some fun. Try to find myself an old car the carburetor and not too much electronics to have been destroyed and maybe go out and race it on the highway or something.
