For longer timelines and if you think the economic infrastructure will remain (i.e. no "cyber pandemic") you could look at treasury inflation-protected securities.

if you have the right storage conditiions, fine cheese should go up in price as it ages.

[ - ] MrDarkWater 0 points 2.7 yearsOct 3, 2022 19:51:42 ago (+0/-0)

I've got a few kraft singles from march. Stored in the cheese drawer ever since.
How much will you give me for them?

[ - ] Artificial_Intelligentile 0 points 2.7 yearsOct 4, 2022 03:51:51 ago (+0/-0)

you have to of course buy whole loafs of cheese that are meant for ripening XD

Silver is tracking with the dollar. May not be a good investment, platinum may make a comeback. Aluminum is booming but it's not practical to store

Add silver to that and you have a good hedge against the worst case scenarios that can play out!

Just make sure you have your crypto in cold storage off exchanges.

Avoid all counter party risk. Hold it all yourself. Don't stake your crypto. Don't buy silver certificates as they are leveraged 418 paper per ounce.

Booze. It stores easily, does not go bad and it's easily sold or bartered.

[ - ] puppy528 7 points 2.7 yearsOct 3, 2022 10:52:35 ago (+7/-0)

Mine keeps deflating in volume tho!

I look at sectors and the only thing rising with inflation in amounts large enough to counter declining purchasing power of the dollar are energy healthcare consumer essentials etc.

All that stuff is up 3% today for example.

Well actually looking at 6 month time periods even most of that is down.

Well shit.

[ - ] FreeinTX 1 point 2.7 yearsOct 3, 2022 10:30:16 ago (+1/-0)

If you'll need it in 3 months, it's best left in cash.

[ - ] Crackinjokes [op] 0 points 2.7 yearsOct 3, 2022 10:41:34 ago (+0/-0)

12 months then

[ - ] 3Whuurs 0 points 2.7 yearsOct 5, 2022 01:57:12 ago (+0/-0)

I’d say crypto If it weren’t a sure thing the gov will just ban it at some point.
But what is it you imagine yourself needing money for the most in 12 months?

[ - ] Crackinjokes [op] 0 points 2.7 yearsOct 3, 2022 10:11:38 ago (+0/-0)*

Not many things have gone up in value against dollar except oil and gas stocks.

Some land stocks but not all.

Euro and pound are down against dollar.

Yet dollar buying less at grocery store.

Strange

If you want to trust the FED, "I bonds" have interest rates that match inflation. So, your buying power won't disappear nearly as fast.

Not saying its smart, just that it exists.

[ - ] texasblood 0 points 2.7 yearsOct 3, 2022 09:59:59 ago (+1/-1)

Still buying at least 50oz of silver shot once a month.

[ - ] Crackinjokes [op] 0 points 2.7 yearsOct 3, 2022 10:02:44 ago (+0/-0)

"silver shot"

Is that literally buckshot made of pure or near pure silver?

Dual purpose. Interesting.

[ - ] Crackinjokes [op] 0 points 2.7 yearsOct 3, 2022 10:09:48 ago (+0/-0)

Spot price 9f silver is down nearly 30% since a year ago.

It hasn't escapeed the asset decline problem.

I am trying to find something that is going up in value relative to dollar to counter dollars declining purchasing power.

[ - ] Crackinjokes [op] 0 points 2.7 yearsOct 3, 2022 10:15:17 ago (+0/-0)

What are you seeing?

Silver and bushcraft gear in case I need to disappear into the woods.

[ - ] Crackinjokes [op] 0 points 2.7 yearsOct 3, 2022 10:01:30 ago (+1/-1)

Is silver holding value against the declining dollar?

What are your exchange fees?

Bushgear/ bullets etc etc can't be resold in 3 months.

I am talking about living money for months and years.

Not a $1000

[ - ] Rebooted 4 points 2.7 yearsOct 3, 2022 10:09:31 ago (+4/-0)

Do you mean a currency you can trade with, or something that has actual value that is worthwhile to yourself and others? If you want something to trade, stockpile small things others might not have and would probably want to trade for. Precious metals, ammo, medical and other supplies, and similar. If you want something that has actual value and you will use and that others would seek you out to trade for, go with food, fuel, medical supplies, skills, and the ability to produce more of these and train others.

"Living money" means you don't need to participate to gain the fruits of the labors of others. If that's what you're looking for, commodity speculation and rent seeking is what you're after. I don't condone this way of life and hope the coming storm destroys it for people.

[ - ] Crackinjokes [op] -1 points 2.7 yearsOct 3, 2022 10:13:08 ago (+0/-1)

I am talking about real world investment that will offset the decline in purchasing power of the dollar.

Not end of the world fantasy trading elements which have their place but aren't the world we live in today.

[ - ] ruck_feddit 4 points 2.7 yearsOct 3, 2022 10:14:20 ago (+4/-0)

You're not going to get anywhere with this, apparently.

[ - ] MrDarkWater 0 points 2.7 yearsOct 3, 2022 19:48:44 ago (+0/-0)

savings account, maybe.
I heard rates are getting better. Will it offset inflation? IDK, I'm not an economist ... That's why I have a stockpile of silver, steel, brass and lead. and booze.

[ - ] Crackinjokes [op] -1 points 2.7 yearsOct 3, 2022 10:18:21 ago (+0/-1)

Living money can be thought of as savings in the bank.
