Turns out Berwind is about 25 miles east of Grundy, where I worked on building a 40' diameter concrete silo for coal, back in 1977. Thought places like that were only in the movies until seeing the real life ghetto, in a mountain valley. Yards full of broken cars, appliances, and whatever. My one interaction with a local was knocking on a door, and having a revolver aimed at my face when some crusty old woman opened it.
I think a place like Berwind repels most people who aren't on meth or pills. Could be a great place to live on the land if none of those current residents and their crumbling houses existed.
