Smart move by Musk. If you allow someone like that to just leave on their own accord, they might take a poo on the carpet on the way out. Musk is a savvy businessman and he knows how to save money on carpet cleaners by not allowing the Indian labor force to defecate freely about the premises. I heard Musk built Tesla entirely on money he saved by avoiding having to clean up poo in the office building.

It also protects the former employee from allegations if something happened, and there is a witness to what was going on so that hopefully the appropriate person can be held responsible if something bad happens.

I do wonder what they do for WfH situations. I know a number of people who have quit them, but I never asked them. I know they shipped boxes of their stuff back to HQ, which is what I would do. I'd box up everything I wouldn't need for just the notice period or whatever, ship it back, then immediately give notice. Then you can just ride out your remaining time with a laptop or whatever. If they want to cut you off, they can.

I have about 500lbs worth of stuff from 15 years. Maybe more. If I were quitting I'd have quite the chore. Basically, I kept moving to progressively bigger offices (in cheaper places, natch) and eventually moved home. So I've just kept everything that they basically don't want to store. IDC cuz I have a basement that's as big as a whole floor of my house that just stores stuff. It would be bad if it flooded too much, past the pallets stuff is on, but that hasn't happened yet.

Some of it is certainly junk based on how old it is. But IDK sorting it would be a bitch. I have "work's junk over here" and "my junk over here," but that's about it.

Every once in a while someone will contact me and complain about a software problem on some years old thing. I'm like, sure, let me carve out some time to dig that out of storage, fire it up, and fix a bug. Or I ship it to someone if its' not my job. Not really a service I ever intended to provide or signed up for but just kinda happened.
