That was my first thought. I wonder how the flavor is affected. Not much circulation in the limbs at that point.

If you're cold they're cold. Bring them inside and warm them up.

Empathy. A trait only descendants of white Europeans have. They're probably the only ones that literally have the brain structure for that neural neuron set. It's not just a cultural thing it's likely a physical thing from many years of evolution and a requirement to have empathy for others to ensure your own cooperative survival in a harsh climate.

Could the innuit people also have empathy? Or does this trait's development require/interact with broader intelligence that was selected for in northern european humans who had to adopt to a very varied diet to survive.

I don't understand. They didn't do the proper thing of just standing around saying "oh shit" as something was brutalized or died.

Every year different animals end up falling in frozen waters and dying. Many fish and other aquatic life depend on these animals, falling in to the cold waters, as a food source. How many of these underwater creatures will starve now because of these people?
Helping my not always be helpful!

Compassion and bravery are important traits and bond a people by demonstrating values that set us apart from others. Also an important learning opportunity for helping revive a hypothermic tribe member.

Why does this evoke so much emotion? Nature is indifferent to life. This creature's demise was prolonged only by intervention. Many before and after him will experience a different outcome, so this event was arguably necessary and a waste of time. Yet I'm glad it happened and I'm glad i got to witness it.
Cool post.

Why not just eat it at that point?

They were caught up a collective spirit of wanting to save it. It was nobler, and a heartening challenge. They were hopeful. And everyone would have felt worse if they'd "failed" to save it (particularly the boys, I'd think), a downer, even if they could rationalize sense in taking the meat. Better to take meat when there was a challenge, a chance for the animal to potentially escape the hunters.
