For me the main negative aspect to "gatekeeping" is that it tends to act as a barrier from people learning about crucial truths. Truths that if they were properly hashed out would actually help people take neccessary actions against things that are causing them grief.

For example. Many people on this site tend to know that some elite members of society are actively subverting the will of the people. However, if you leave it as ambiguously worded as I did there, then people will form their own opinion of who the elite is and will chase after the puppets and not the entities pulling the strings.

The puppets can be changed out if need be so long as the puppet-master is unharmed.

The people who fought the puppets give up because they think they have solved the problem. Then the song and dance continues, with a slightly different score to try and win over the crowd just long enough so that the puppet-master can try and fleece a bit more money/time/life out of the people stuck in the show.

It was a good way for millenials to call out boomer nepotism among other games they were abusing to keep power. The boomers are finally dieing but the gatekeeping thing is still around.

It's a component of the purity spiral. Happens all the time right here in the dissident right. TRS is probably the worst example. If you aren't goosestepping down main street every night with a swastika banner, you're not hardcore enough and you get banned from their forum. Faggots.
