The Baader Meinhof Gang, also called the Rote Armee Fraktion (RAF). The RAF was founded by Andreas "the whole system is shit" Baader and Ulrike Meinhof in West Germany but had strong links to East Germany and were also involved with other European and Middle Eastern revolutionary groups at various times.

The intent of the RAF was to create an atmosphere of violence and instability in West Germany in order to expose the Federal government as the despotic regime that it was, and still is today cloaked in the rhetoric of public democracy. The RAF saw the German public as a reactionary mass that had been usurped by consumerism into serving the commercial capitalist enterprise. As a consequence they concluded that individual expressions of revolutionary action could ignite a new social consciousness.

Unfortunately the RAF put the cart before the horse, and lacking a substantial base of public support instead of liberation the opposite resulted and the West German government became even more authoritarian (imagine that!), nullifying legal rights to stomp out the Red menace without a second thought. The RAF also suffered from wretched timing. Post WWII Germany was anything but revolutionary, and the RAF really didn't fathom this or the intensity with which their contemporary conservative, safety-seeking population would oppose them.

Nonetheless the Baader Meinhof gang had cohesion and an intensity that made them the most enduring urban revolutionary group in the western world lasting around 30 years.

The Red Army Faction, A Documentary History - Volume 1: Projectiles For the People

https://pmpress.org/index.php?l=product_detail&p=49

The first in a two-volume series, this is by far the most in-depth political history of the Red Army Faction ever made available in English.
