results may vary, mine was just a dull pain over the years and never got too bad, so i dunno how this will work for more severe cases.

As someone who struggles with ingrown nails. Yes this has been my technique for 30+ years.

still get them every once in a while, but i just cut and rip. painful sometimes.

shaving the center(top) of the nail and trimming the center of the nail(portion that extends out) will help the nail grow to the center and not the side

I accidentally cured my two toes of this by getting rid of toenail fungus. I am wondering if there is a fungal component with ingrown nails, that is interfering with normal nail growth which then leads to ingrowing.

Anyway..once I got rid of the fungus, my nails now grow straight as arrows ever since. The problem just disappeared when I nuked the fungus.

So I accidentally fixed two issues in one go. Now I am curious of others with ingrown nails actually have a hidden fungal issue as the root cause.

You need to get in there with some sort of tool and get the junk out after the tenderness goes away.

yeah it pressed a massive trench into my toe looks covered in dead skin, ill cut it out when the trench depresses

I've read that sticking floss under the toenail can raise it so it doesn't grow into the skin. If there's a next time for me I'm going to try, because they're annoying.

It's not identical, but this is very similar to what I use for cutting out ingrown nails:

The one I have looks more like an A because it's a bit longer and comes to a small point.

the floss method got me onto this idea, instead of floss i just used a nub to start raising it instead

This is what I use

This seems like bullshit, but @neongreen says whatever. I will believe him.

I get some pretty advanced versions of this but that's my standard 2 month process for the ones on my big toes.

I too have been doing this techniques for years. works best when the nail is longer, soak the foot so it is soft, dig out all around/under the nail and it works well when maintained

Mine was excruciating.
Do I had them surgically cut then acid to stop regrowth.

...

They regrew.
But I learnt how to get fine cutters down the side of the nails and cut it out.
20 years of this.

Dull pain let's me know when it's time.
Sigh
