Just make sure it's in a closed container. The dust from lapis lazuli is toxic, and if they're playing with it, and they will because they're kids, they can poison themselves.
The most ideal crystals are quartz. They're pretty and have a lot of properties that we're only beginning to scientifically study.
If you're interested in learning more, try looking up a metaphysical shop near you and asking some questions when they're not busy. Most of them love to talk.
Any particular personality characteristics you are looking to highlight or accentuate?
Didn't happen for me until somewhat late in life and, after some transformational work, I began to experience sensation from stones (much to my surprise; I'd always thought it was a load of bollucks).
Tons of awesome stuff out there. With the understanding that this may not be particularly helpful within the context of your inquiry, I recommend visiting a local rock shop and see if anything speaks to you.

That's good advise, but we've already done that so I was reaching out because the internet is large and full of various fags that fag different things. I am looking for crystal fags.
I think it's funny that you think the crystal fags hang out on voat. Something tells me there is an r/crystals subreddit that has some serious crystal fags.
I have some good examples for you that shouldn't be expensive.
Halite. You can get nice sized "fancy" chunks of large crystals in many different colors. It's basically salt, and kids think it's cool to taste it.
Iron pyrite. Kids love fool's gold.
Geodes. You get to hammer them open together. Who knows what color the crystals will be? And, your kid gets to hammer open a rock.
Amethyst. You can get big pieces of it really cheap.
Agate. Not a polished stone or ball. Find a slice. It's like nature's painted glass and it'll look cool in your kid's window or as a night light. Not really a crystal, but it's in the spirit of the question.
And if your kid thinks that last one is cool, get a nice piece of tigers eye.
And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;
20 The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.
21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
Ulexite. A personal fave. It's also known as TV stone. The big white crystals if uncut look impressive. Like something you could see on top of a wizard's staff. It takes light very well. So well in fact that if it's cut and polished right it can act like a stack of fiber-optic. I have a cut and uncut version of the stone. I prefer the big one, but the small, cut one can lift text off a page.
Quartz is readily available. You can also get a rock tumbler kit if your kids are in to that type of thing.
You can also find rocks meant to be shoved into a vagina. Not sure why anyone would do this but they have boxed sets of many common rocks. Don't do that to your kid though.

Any selection criteria beyond aesthetically pleasing and non-toxic?
*Edit: Not full-on and possibly faggy enough to answer your question.

To these, I would add Alexandrite and Rhodochrosite, both of which are favorites of mine. Labradorite is pretty spectacular as well.
