Like a neon light. In fact, the sun ionizes gasses as it makes it's way around the world. It's why sunsets can appear pink or orange or sometimes purple. It's the reason for the strange anomalies like the entire sky appearing green. The majority of the ether is nitrogen and oxygen. This gives us what we call daylight. I would think anomalies like the Aurora Borealis are a result of more rare noble gases gathering in a whirlpool. Like a marshmallow would draw to the center of a cup of hot cocoa if it were stirred.
