Mathematically you don't need downvotes. You do not need them to balance things. The point of a voting system is to bring good content to the top. Upvotes allow that. If you're downvoting it either your feels were hurt and you need to go back to Reddit, or it's someone violating the rules or spamming, and you need to report them not just give them negative Internet points.

There's value in knowing how much a community rejects something. Otherwise it just looks like a post was sort of overlooked. That's why you have weird metrics on twitter like the ratio of retweets to likes. It's why youtube started hiding downvotes. You can create a fake illusion of consensus.

That said, I don't think downvotes need to work towards a post being censored or anything like that. But if people can upvote because it makes their bellies feel warm and fuzzy and there isn't some retarded system of rules policing the reasons why people might upvote something - "oh no someone used it as an I Agree button!" - then there doesn't need to be anything like that governing the use of a downvote button.

If someone says something stupid, it's great and sometimes funny when a community is allowed to come together and show how much they hate it. Like when one of youtubes own videos was among the most downvoted videos of all time.

Good points. I remember one Reddit clone I think showing the totals of upvotes and downvotes, so they don't cancel each other out. Then you could see things like controversial posts where it got a lot of upvotes and downvotes, rather than them canceling and it looking like something just not very popular.

Not really. I don't think the downvote policy has anything to do with poal being lame.

There's nothing wrong with attempting to use downvotes for a specific purpose (actual spam,etc) other than the fact that some people really really hate that and need to fight with points and group consensus enough to get riled up and post on other unrelated websites about it.

This isn't old Voat. At the time of old Voats end there were two clear options for being it's successor: talk and poal. That's why it's relevant. That history is now a part of our community's DNA.

It's interesting to me that a user was able to call out a lot of Poal's flaws way in advance. Perhaps that will be useful info in case such a situation arises again.
