As for why, it's the juxtaposition of the physical and spiritual. That you're somehow this spiritual ghostly being and that denying your physical drives (namely reproduction) will somehow propel you towards God (or god or source or universe or whatever).

This "monk" did not understand shit. You are definitely a spiritual being but you're here to learn about being physical. Along the way, you make mistakes, learn lessons. But the ultimate goal is to see past the substance of physical existence so that the physical becomes unimportant. In so doing, you completely miss the point of existence and will miss your goal.
