You should appear to support people all over the range of an ideology, and likewise be against others.

The measuring of responses can mostly be automated, and guys who do it professionally have those tools, but if you're just looking to measure sentiment it is trivial to eyeball the responses and learn over time.

For example the threshold for relevance for a particular site is 35 votes up or down and at least five comments. These numbers are different on TGP and zerohedge and a host of other sites. Below this number the values don't tell you anything about the community and its beliefs.

Theres two approaches to shaping public opinion: a dedicated fanatical base, or a big tent approach. Ideally these approaches are used in tandem, with the big tent forming the front-group for recruiting, while the dedicate base is pre-established or selected from the larger front group.

Doing that job is a vastly more difficult task if you don't have a firm grip on opinion formation and thresholds.
