Was on a worksite the other day with these large pits for... i dont know, maybe pool filtering and pumps and shit, either way we had one labourer on site go 'hey what are all these pits for?"
Czech guy looks at it and goes 'Tank traps' 'fucking what?' 'Stop ze germans invading'
If you took your 20 yr old American Truck to a freakin' Ford Dealer every time it needed an oil change, that would be expensive, too.
You're overgeneralizing. The good thing about old cars is you can look up the service record. Some models are known dogs, and if you buy them you better know what you're getting into. Others are more reliable than American cars and not as reliable as Toyota but tend to have more features for a given model year.
So... buy a model with a decent service record. Take it to an independent mechanic. Use aftermarket parts where available.
You don't even have to have any particular skill.
As with any car apart from wear items, it tends to be particular features that fail early. Again, avoid those where you can, but also people tend to find reasonable solutions for these online. A stealership or even someone who is just following the manual might replace your whole transmission when one little bit inside has failed. You can find someone to do that work for you.
If you bought a car solely because the company has a distant connection to Hitler, and has zero to do with the man or party today, that's pretty retarded.
I have some doubts about the quality of VWs today, even though I wouldn't mind trying out a VW Golf.
I didnt buy it because of some distant connection to Hitler, although I think the connection is a cool piece of history, however I do agree that's a retarded reason to buy a car. Also, take note of the year, it's an 08, no fancy electronics or digital mechanisms, low km, easy to fix. It's got the MK4 Golf engine, reliable car with lots of parts available... And Hitler; of course.
IDK why we're always talking about VWs now. Not that I'm complaining. I like German cars although more BMW than VW. But there are some Audis that I'd like to buy.
Sometimes? I mean if you're looking for a car you can easily repair the best thing you can do is go older, older, older. If your VW were old enough, it'd be easy to repair (although the parts might be scarce). If you just got a new American car thinking you could repair it easily, I think you'd be mistaken.
Things newer cars will have: turbochargers (most models these days), sealed+complicated transmission, a computer up center, sensors everywhere.
Yeah this is the main reason I liked this car for her. It has no features, not centered around a computer, roll-up windows, turn key, easily diagnosed/repaired, lots of parts available at local junkyards and considerably low kms.
It actually doesnt have the Jetta engine in it. It's got a Golf MK4 engine. It's a strange run that was limited to '07,'08 and '09. During this timeframe they were switching to the 2.5L 5cyl MK5 and did a limited run to clear out old stock. It's a good car.
