Bought my wife an 08 Jetta and my father-in-law asked me why a VW?

I told him "if it's good enough for mein Führer it's good enough for my girl."

...nobody liked that

Hitler would burn VW to the ground today and gas every executive of that company. Same as Ford and Disney.

I’m still driving an 03, love that stupid little thing

A used European car is the most expensive vehicle

[ - ] Breeder 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 16, 2023 11:16:03 ago (+0/-0)*

Maybe now. I bought my 2016 Golf with 25k miles on it right before the scamdemic for $13k.

I wasn't talking about the cost of purchasing

If you took your 20 yr old American Truck to a freakin' Ford Dealer every time it needed an oil change, that would be expensive, too.

You're overgeneralizing. The good thing about old cars is you can look up the service record. Some models are known dogs, and if you buy them you better know what you're getting into. Others are more reliable than American cars and not as reliable as Toyota but tend to have more features for a given model year.

So... buy a model with a decent service record. Take it to an independent mechanic. Use aftermarket parts where available.

You don't even have to have any particular skill.

As with any car apart from wear items, it tends to be particular features that fail early. Again, avoid those where you can, but also people tend to find reasonable solutions for these online. A stealership or even someone who is just following the manual might replace your whole transmission when one little bit inside has failed. You can find someone to do that work for you.

[ - ] NedsHead 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 16, 2023 21:32:51 ago (+0/-0)

All the VW ads here in Australia are made up of kikes and niggers, so I assume the company was taken by filthy kikes as war reparations

If you bought a car solely because the company has a distant connection to Hitler, and has zero to do with the man or party today, that's pretty retarded.

I have some doubts about the quality of VWs today, even though I wouldn't mind trying out a VW Golf.

[ - ] i_scream_trucks 1 point 2.4 yearsJan 16, 2023 19:17:48 ago (+1/-0)

there is a reason they spent 5 years faking emissions testing.

also a reason that god awful 'new beetle' existed.

[ - ] OriginalGoat [op] 1 point 2.4 yearsJan 16, 2023 22:11:31 ago (+1/-0)

I didnt buy it because of some distant connection to Hitler, although I think the connection is a cool piece of history, however I do agree that's a retarded reason to buy a car. Also, take note of the year, it's an 08, no fancy electronics or digital mechanisms, low km, easy to fix. It's got the MK4 Golf engine, reliable car with lots of parts available... And Hitler; of course.

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 16, 2023 16:09:56 ago (+0/-0)

IDK why we're always talking about VWs now. Not that I'm complaining. I like German cars although more BMW than VW. But there are some Audis that I'd like to buy.

[ - ] solomonpapermaster 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 16, 2023 16:13:00 ago (+0/-0)

They are a pain in the ass to repair. You need special tools.

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 16, 2023 16:19:48 ago (+0/-0)

Sometimes? I mean if you're looking for a car you can easily repair the best thing you can do is go older, older, older. If your VW were old enough, it'd be easy to repair (although the parts might be scarce). If you just got a new American car thinking you could repair it easily, I think you'd be mistaken.

Things newer cars will have: turbochargers (most models these days), sealed+complicated transmission, a computer up center, sensors everywhere.

[ - ] OriginalGoat [op] 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 16, 2023 22:15:32 ago (+0/-0)

Yeah this is the main reason I liked this car for her. It has no features, not centered around a computer, roll-up windows, turn key, easily diagnosed/repaired, lots of parts available at local junkyards and considerably low kms.

[ - ] Clubberlang 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 16, 2023 17:50:08 ago (+0/-0)

The mechanics or the actual tool?

[ - ] solomonpapermaster 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 16, 2023 18:48:28 ago (+0/-0)

From what I understand it's a real pain in the ass and you need special tools. And that obviously means special parts as well.

[ - ] fritz_maurentod 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 16, 2023 15:58:58 ago (+0/-0)

VW has close ties with the German leftist government, especially the SPD party.

[ - ] Ragnar 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 16, 2023 15:38:13 ago (+0/-0)

Then everyone didn’t clap

[ - ] DivineLight2 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 16, 2023 13:01:03 ago (+1/-1)

VW have some damn good cars and excellent engines, but the Jetta ain't one of them.

Smokes any of the big yank shit boxes that guzzle fuel like an amerifat guzzles goysyrup.

[ - ] OriginalGoat [op] 1 point 2.4 yearsJan 17, 2023 01:29:09 ago (+1/-0)

It actually doesnt have the Jetta engine in it. It's got a Golf MK4 engine. It's a strange run that was limited to '07,'08 and '09. During this timeframe they were switching to the 2.5L 5cyl MK5 and did a limited run to clear out old stock. It's a good car.
