We could have a "people's car" but the government won't allow it because of muh safety.
A few years ago Mahindra, a pajeet company, who somehow owns patent rights to the original jeep started to import them into the US and sell them for $14,000. Mind you, this design hasn't really changed since the 50's, IT'S A JEEP.
It's a jeep that's affordable with all the basic accommodations........except safety. No airbags, ABS brakes, 5 mph bumpers, crush testing, emissions and mpg requirements etc etc.
A US made Jeep is $32,000 base price. <<< That's how much regulation and safety costs.
The US government doesn't feel like you are responsible enough to make your own decisions. Just like mom and dad, you are their pet.
Would I put my family in one and drive them across the US? No but I want the option as a free man. FUCK YOU government.
I wonder how hard it would be to convince the retards at the local DMV that it is street legal.
Considering the way things are these days, I could probably just drive it around as is with no plates, since all the criminal types already do that with apparent impunity as it is.
Designed to eliminate the air cooled engine. VW was one of the first manufacturers to utilize fuel injection, Both my 71 Porsche 914 and on a 72 VW 412 station wagon were port fuel injected. VW tried to adapt mid stream in 82 by engineering a water jacket around the heads of a type 4 motor they used in Vanagon, it allowed them to continue with the basic design of the horizontally opposed 4 cylinder engine until 1991. Iterations of these models, (the bug included) continued to be produced in other countries that did not have GM lobbyists such as South Africa, Mexico and Brazil.
