Depends on how long you work. Surgeons did used to retire at 55 so they only ever worked 15 years. Whereas a plumber could work 30 years or more. I don't know how common it is for ppl to retire at 55 any more.

A surgeon would work as a surgeon for 15 years, but you have to add another 9 years of labor in residency where the surgeon is paid less than a mcdonalds slave while working 12-16 hour shifts and being treated like shit. Before that add 2 years as an unpaid rotating medical student who works 12 hour shifts. Most likely add 1-2 years for fellowships. Also mostly unpaid. So really thats 15 years plus 13 years. The plumber makes money during the 30 years with an ever increasing salary. The surgeon makes fuck all for 13 years and accumulates about 400000 in debt during the first 4 years and then accumulates interest, probably 6.5%, for the next 10. Ending up with at least 650,000$ to pay back. Then starts making 400k per year on average. After being taxed 40% and paying out 100k for malpractice insurance they an expect to take home maybe 140k. With interest and assuming they will want to pay it off in 15 years that would cost around 6k per month in payments, leaving our surgeon with an effective salary of 68k per year take home. Obviously very rough numbers. A plumber has a 15 year head start and can make 70-80k early on fairly easily. Ive known plumbers who are making over 250k.

I had a thing going with a woman in her forties when I was about that age and it was depressing. She was popping pills and seemed deathly lonely. She had divorced her husband and, rather than letting him have his shit, she filled her one bedroom apartment with so much furniture you couldn't get around and had to climb over things. See I work a lot but I also make a lot of money. My wife does all "the books" and household stuff. She works and makes like 50k but less hours and that's a pittance compared to what I make. It's rare to find one that is responsible though. She had a drinking problem when we met. Hell we both had problems. We dug ourselves out of it together and built a better life. I guess that's what makes a good relationship. Two people who may not be perfect but are willing to change for the better.

Med school is 4 years in the US. Residency is another 2+, but I know that many surgeons are in practice by 35. There are ways for it to take longer. 42 seems quite old, but maybe she didn't do all this stuff right away after college starting at 22 or whatever.
