KBB gives that car a ~$1,333 value. Take your $289/month, save $200/month out of it and use the $89 on bus tickets/a bike/decent walkin' shoes for a couple of months. Then go buy a used one for cash when you get ~$2,000.

My parents forced me to buy a new car through incessant nagging. I wanted a junker. Ford Escort was a reasonably sized sedan that was cheap. It turns out, it was the most reliable car I ever owned. It lasted me about 17 years with me ignoring a lot of maintenance. (The transmission dropped in the first year, but it was covered under warranty and I never had a problem with it again.)
