If you want to really lose some sleep, look up Toxoplasma Gondii.
Protozoan parasites. Reproduces in cats but infects all warm blooded animals, including humans. Can also pass from mother to fetus. Eating infected meat can cause infection. Spreads through most of our body, including the brain.
Causes changes in behavior and mood. Alters political views. Hosts with high testosterone tend to become more right-wing, hosts with low testosterone become more left-wing. Reduces ability to concentrate and focus. Nearly triples rate of traffic accidents. Strong correlations with schizophrenia and other mental disorders. Raises suicide rate.
At least 50% of humans are chronically infected.
Acute infections can be partially treated to help reduce the number of active parasites. And a healthy immune system will try to fight them as well. But they respond by retreating into cysts, which are immune, and in which they multiply until the cyst bursts and they spread out again.
You have to get tested for it. Usually a blood test. But this only detects "active" infections. So when a large enough amount of the parasites are causing enough trouble for your immune system to create antibodies to fight them.
If they've mostly retreated into cysts then it's more difficult to detect. And what would be the point? It's not like there's anything that can be done about it when it's dormant like that. Once you're carrying them, that's that. They'll pop out now and then, your immune system will fight them, they go dormant for a while, rinse and repeat.
Generally doctors will advise against testing unless you're having severe symptoms of Toxoplasmosis, which usually only occurs when you have a weakened immune system. Healthy people don't present any obvious symptoms. It might mess with your head a bit, but how would you know the difference?
All you can do is try not to think about it. If you have them, you have them. They're part of you now.

There is no cure.
