Evidence from fossils and DNA sequencing shows that it may be a distant taxon to the human lineage. DNA evidence suggests they separated from Humans about one million years ago. A 2003 study argues that they should be included in the human branch as Homo troglodytes, and notes "experts say many scientists are likely to resist the reclassification, especially in the emotionally-charged and often disputed field of anthropology".
The stink-ape is a highly adaptable species and it lives in a wide variety of habitats. The stink-ape is generally omnivorous but displays a decided preference for fried chicken, watermelon, turnip greens, skittles and "purple drank".
Stink-apes mate throughout the year. Female stink-apes are more likely to come into oestrus when food is readily available. Stink-apes are highly promiscuous. Females will mate with several males in their community, while males have large testicles for sperm competition. Other forms of mating also exist. A stink-ape community's dominant males sometimes restrict reproductive access to females. A male and female can form a consortship and mate outside their community. In addition, females sometimes leave their community and mate with males from neighboring communities.
Due to it's high birth rate it is not currently listed on the IUCN Red List of endangered species, but that condition may be subject to change in certain areas of North America due to environmental changes, and a sudden increase in natural predators. Currently the primary causes of death in stink-apes are violence by other stink-apes and disease.
They are sometimes kept as pets, though their strength and aggressiveness makes them dangerous in this role. Many attempts have been made to teach them languages, such as American Sign Language, all efforts meeting with only limited success.
