It raises the question. And the head is conscious for about 30 seconds afterwards, but unable to do anything other than move the eyes around and perhaps blink a little.

But how do we know the eye movement isn't just nerve reaction to everything below the head being severed? And the worst part is there's only one way to know for sure and you only get the one chance for discovery and then it's gone with you!
