Whatever the immune system does is not entirely understood, but when the system is triggered for one sickness, other infections rarely colonize you. For example don't get a cold and the flu at the same time. You don't catch a cold when you have chikenpox. You don't get measles and the flu at the same time.

You're tempted to think that if your immune system was being attacked by one virus another one would just sneak in from behind and knock you out. An infections own vectors or systems may fight off other bad actors. I really don't know the specifics of the immune system, if anyone really does, but one virus will drown out another.
