I'm not sure who's opening the thread, but I'll take a stab at it! It's time for the Friday Night Guitar Thread! Everyone is welcome to come share some music that they made or to listen to music made by others.

Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Talk.lol go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @Sleazy or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

The rust falls away quickly, with some regular practice. So, we'll be here when you're ready.

[ - ] popticalillusion 5 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:26:49 ago (+5/-0)

I just started playing my guitar again. The songs come back quickly, but I am still refining my coordination and muscle strength. This thread is pretty friendly and gives pretty constructive feedback, so lay down some beats and share them!

sweet!

[ - ] ParnellsUprising 3 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 21:12:01 ago (+3/-0)

I hear you can get a 36 pack of bud light for less than 20 bucks, that should shake off some of it.

Hey, I don't have anything new this week and am in a hurry to get the thread open. So, I decided just to pick something original and go for it...

Which song did I pick? The Friday Night Guitar Thread Theme Song, of course!

Enjoy the thread!

Rock on, Goats! Rock on!

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:07:01 ago (+4/-0)

This is one of my most favorite songs ever!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:12:09 ago (+5/-0)

I figured it had been a long while since I last actually shared it in a thread.

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:19:56 ago (+4/-0)

It has been quite a while

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:32:25 ago (+5/-0)

It's available from the link in the intro. So, I suppose folks could have found it that way.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:34:15 ago (+3/-0)

I listen to that song regularly. I have since I first heard it. Sometime I put it on repeat and listen to it 4 or 5 times in a row

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 6 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:38:28 ago (+6/-0)

Well, at least it's getting listened to! It took a ton of work, so that's good that it's still getting listened to.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:45:21 ago (+3/-0)

All my friends have heard it!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 4 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:53:14 ago (+4/-0)

Hmm... How sure are you when you say "all"?

(Many of mine have heard the song about my lawyer, but definitely not all of 'em.)

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 21:03:22 ago (+4/-0)

There may be a few that I do not see regularly that have not heard it. All those I usually seed once month or so have heard it, I know that

[ - ] popticalillusion 4 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:22:14 ago (+4/-0)

Something rare for me; I can listen to the tracks before midnight this week! My internet is kinda unstable so I had to cancel my usual Live Broadcast on the radio station.

That was an awesome piece right there! I hope I can rebuild my skills to at least be able to rock out a rhythm like that some day. I saw in the archives that there were a few contributors to the writing. If you get time can you refresh my poor memory of who they were?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 4 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:35:04 ago (+4/-0)

There's Biff, sometimes "EH" or "B".

Thee's J, she's a band member.

There's me, often "TB".

There are a bunch of uncredited people along the way, as I've recorded with a bunch of people over the years the thread has gone on. I've even done a couple of pieces with some old band mates at a get-together done in a professional studio. Seek out "November Rain" for an example of that. It was even recorded with a real piano and not a keyboard.

But, EH/B, J, and TB are those you'll usually see. They're also "the usual suspects" in many file names.

[ - ] popticalillusion 4 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:50:06 ago (+4/-0)

I'll look up that November Rain. I really love songs that have the changing dynamics and tempos in them.

If we have any new people checking out the thread, they will also be informed as to the credits and participation in the Friday Night Thread Theme Song. thanks for adding the information!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:53:47 ago (+5/-0)

There's likely a couple of versions. I once copied Jung's version and that should be in the archives.

[ - ] ChatGPT 3 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 23:16:31 ago (+3/-0)

Man alive you rocked the hell outta that. fires horns

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 23:19:53 ago (+3/-0)

Glad ya liked it. It's technically the thread's theme song, but I haven't shared it all that much.

It seemed like a good day to drag it out, dust it off, and share it again.

[ - ] popticalillusion 5 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:58:13 ago (+5/-0)

All my gear is new, except my guitar, so I am still getting used to how it all works. I ended up with this cover of Stone Temple Pilot's Plush.

I have to wear hearing aids, so I would really appreciate any comments on the highs and lows, and also the balance of the instruments in the mix.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 21:06:19 ago (+5/-0)

I'm on a laptop, but it sounded okay to me. The mix was fine, close enough to the original. It did sound a bit bass-heavy, but it could otherwise pass as a karaoke track.

I don't even have headphones handy, so that's the best I can offer.

[ - ] popticalillusion 4 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 21:16:02 ago (+4/-0)

Cool. I used to play the bass, so I like to be able to hear them and the drummer well when I used to play live. I probably had it set kinda high when recording my guitar part to attempt to get tight with them. On this song I play a few of the bass notes too because the distorted guitar part is kinda simple and doesn't have that groove like the bass part does. That could bring it out a bit more too. LOL

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 21:21:07 ago (+5/-0)

I have studio monitors in my studio. I'll try to remember to listen to it again tomorrow - on real speakers. That'll tell me a great deal.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 21:50:15 ago (+3/-0)

Cool. I love that song. I liked the way your guitar sounds. It was mixed fine to my ears

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 1 yearMay 6, 2023 04:19:57 ago (+2/-0)

I wanted to have it up in the mix because that's the main input I actually have here. I didn't want to get too carried away though and ruin the overall mix. I also put some mixing and editing work in on it too. I'm not sure what's up with the effects on my Audacity at the moment, so I was forced to mix it without the reverb and chorus I wanted to add in.

Man, if I only had this kind of tech and the availability of music resources out now when I was younger, I could have recorded and learned so much more.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 1 yearMay 6, 2023 07:47:01 ago (+1/-0)

I use Reaper and I really like it

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1 yearMay 6, 2023 19:55:29 ago (+1/-0)

I might have to check something new out. Audacity worked great with Ubuntu, but I have switched to Arch Linux which I believe to be the issue. I could actually just copy the file and save it in my Virtual Machine Ubuntu and probably get it mixed the way I had intended. I can run Windows versions under WINE, so there's always that option too.

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1 yearMay 7, 2023 01:19:19 ago (+1/-0)

Reaper looks interesting. The Windows version is free for like 60 days.
I installed the Windows version of Audacity too and it gave me the ability to add effects to tracks now. Also everything is compatible with my linux version. I'll see if I can tweak my recording tomorrow to get the sound I was looking for.

[ - ] Sleazy 5 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:06:18 ago (+5/-0)

I wasn't sure either and I just saw it is 7:03! Thanks for opening the thread!

My buddy Verle got out of the hospital a couple days ago and he came over to my house. My buddy Chris came over too, and Verle wanted to sing this song after his bout with death that he survived.

Hard to be humble

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:11:34 ago (+5/-0)

LOL I'm pretty sure he shouldn't be getting drunk with his tolerance down, his weight down, and the destructive nature of his hospitalization and ailments.

Ah well... It's Verle, so of course he is. I don't think I expected anything else.

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:19:18 ago (+4/-0)

Yup! Verle didn't really take it easy on his exit from the hospital.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:31:41 ago (+5/-0)

I'm shocked (and disappointed) that they didn't commit his ass for a 28 day program.

Though that probably wouldn't help. This is Verle after all.

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:33:29 ago (+4/-0)

They never even asked him where he got the fentanyl or anything. The police were never notified or involved. It was an overdose on illegal drugs, one would think the hospital would contact them about things like that as a matter of course.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:37:45 ago (+5/-0)

I suppose it's probably so common that they only bother getting the police involved if it's a fatality.

I'm still surprised they didn't blue paper him. (I don't know what it is in your jurisdiction, but it's an involuntary committal.)

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:51:16 ago (+4/-0)

There was talk about moving him to a assisted living facility, it was said that he can't walk, but a couple times he got up and went outside and walked from my front door to the back door

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:56:52 ago (+5/-0)

So, he just didn't want to walk?

That sounds like Verle.

He really should be taking it easy. Alas, while he was in the hospital, he got his monthly check. So, he's probably drunk as fuck right now. Hopefully, he avoids Fentanyl and making suicide claims.

Though, I kinda want to ask him to send me a couple of those Fentanyl pills. ;-) Just crush 'em up and put the powder in an envelope along with a birthday card! Send it to the house I sometimes use as an office during the blueberry season and send it with a fake name!

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 21:02:18 ago (+4/-0)

I just heard from another friend of Verle and mine that he got an eight ball last night and smoked it up with some girl named Francene and he did not even get lucky

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 4 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 21:07:38 ago (+4/-0)

Man, that sucks... You gotta be sure to get laid before the 8 ball is done, after just a couple of bumps while she knows that you have plenty more. If not, you do the 'well, I'm tired and going to bed' thing.

[ - ] popticalillusion 4 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:42:59 ago (+4/-0)

When Verle's on it sounds pretty good. I love live recordings, but I don't currently have anyone to do any with.Great playing too. The guitar volume was up where we can hear what you got on this one.

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 20:46:58 ago (+4/-0)

I am very lucky that I have a couple of real good friends that I get to play and sing with almost every week! I still play when they aren't around but it's not quite the same or as much fun. Music is for sharing!

[ - ] ChatGPT 2 points 1 yearMay 5, 2023 23:19:47 ago (+2/-0)

This is a funny song. I saw Mac Davis do this on some talk show back in the day. He's got a real good hit song from a few years back called Baby, Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me.

[ - ] JudyStroyer 2 points 1 yearMay 6, 2023 12:04:19 ago (+2/-0)

Im working on something. I am doing the guitars, drums, and bass. Its the recording and mixing that i am trying to learn. I will contribute! So glad you guys brought this here. Home. Love ya goats!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 1 yearMay 6, 2023 14:52:07 ago (+0/-0)

It does feel more like home than Poal ever did. Our intro on Poal mentioned that we were 'guests'. That's not a part of the intro here.

We're here every Friday, so when you're ready to share we'll be here. We've been doing this for more than five years now. I don't see us stopping any time soon.
