Couple of years ago a kid asked me what time it was. I was wearing an analog watch and showed her. Her exact words were "how am i supposed to know what time it is" lol. I then asked her has no one ever taught you how to read the time on an analog watch or clock? Made me laugh and pity her at the same time. Told her it was 3:20 and learn how to read an analog clock. LMAO

Yep. Another thing is they will get the order wrong almost every time in fast food. When we're traveling doing ball games we sometimes have to stop and get something --as nasty as that shit is--- and 90% the order is wrong. Chicky nuggets? We never even ordered any but there they are while our burgers are missing or whatever else. It infuriates me.

I use to practice telling the time at work outside by the angle of the sun, after a couple of weeks continually finetuning - could quickly reliably tell time to within 5 mins.

The Amish embody this, always having the tools to live off the land, without massive dependency on the rest of the world working without fail. I imagine people engineers of today could re-invent these tools, even when they hadn't seen the original ones.

You get familiarized with the older tools of the trade when you learn it. Then you never use them. But you know they exist and likely how to teach yourself how to use them if needed.

Its like every STEM major knows how to do math by hand, but almost none of them do. It's either simple enough to do in your head or you program a computer to do it for you.

Sure, you could teach yourself to use a slide-rule, but you don't really need to.

I don't think every STEM had done math by hand. By the time they are in intermediate and high school they are all using calculators for anything more complicated than the simplest calculation.
