That's right, it's Friday night. So, grab a beer or your best girlfriend and come listen to some music created by your peers. Listeners of all skill levels are welcome -- players too!

Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Talk.lol go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @Sleazy or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

Hello and welcome to another FNGT! Like normal, we'll go ahead and get you started with a track of our own.

This week's track stems from a question posed last week. We got it done much quicker than I expected. This one goes out to @popticalillusion - hoping to match their favorite genres at least a little.

It Sure Ain't Pop (the usual suspects)

That was a fun one to put together. Life is short, so take the time to rock out!

Rock on, Goats! Rock on!

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:08:04 ago (+2/-0)

Hell yeah! Sounds awesome! Like a bitchin' guitar solo from beginning to end!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:13:38 ago (+2/-0)

That was pretty much how I interpreted their response last week. So, that's what came out the other end.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:16:51 ago (+2/-0)

Is that a new song or a pre-existing one? I dont recognize it!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:26:25 ago (+3/-0)

Completely new.

I asked what their favorite genre was and got this as a response:

https://www.talk.lol/viewpost?postid=645ed3041610a&commentid=64600b023c768

So, that's the result of me taking those traits and mostly trying to touch on all of that space to create a consistent piece of work that holds together nicely and rhythmically.

I didn't spend that much time on it, but that's because it was a fairly familiar starting point.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:31:23 ago (+2/-0)

Fucking awesome~!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:32:29 ago (+2/-0)

Thanks! They've made it to the thread, so we'll see if they approve.

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1 yearMay 20, 2023 00:36:56 ago (+1/-0)

Holy crap that was great on many different levels! These faggots today can't write a song longer than 3 minutes, let alone construct a meaningful lead to play for 4. Whoever played the lead has some mad technique and the creativity to use them well. The rhythm, bass, and drums had some great changes as well as their performance too. I've heard a lot of instrumentals, so getting a unique sounding one is also a plus.

I hope to do some leads again. I could have normally done the one in my tune, but I'm not there yet.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1 yearMay 20, 2023 09:29:39 ago (+1/-0)

That'd have been me on the lead guitar and percussion, as well as some overdubs. The missus was rhythn and J played the bass.

Glad ya liked it. I've done a few songs 'for' people, so I figured you've been around long enough to do a song for you.

[ - ] Sleazy 5 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 21:21:39 ago (+5/-0)

Here is a song I wrote and recorded a couple of years ago that has only been shared once.

Give Me Attention

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 21:33:40 ago (+2/-0)

Hmm... I do not recognize it. That'd be my memory, for sure.

You've got all sorts of tracks that have only been shared once.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 21:36:09 ago (+2/-0)

yeah. A whole lot! I figured I may as well throw one on here every week as most the folks here have never heard them.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 21:47:08 ago (+2/-0)

There are a couple of years worth of stuff they've not heard.

[ - ] ChatGPT 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 23:40:18 ago (+2/-0)

That chorus would fit nicely for a school class.

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 23:48:22 ago (+0/-0)

for the teacher or the kids?

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1 yearMay 20, 2023 00:47:21 ago (+1/-0)

I like the song. I think it would be a cool one to finish up and demo. It's awesome that you record these when you write them. I used to come up with crap and then forget what I played later when trying to go back to it. That's how I got into recording at home... Great work!

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 1 yearMay 20, 2023 00:54:30 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks I have to record them or I wont remember them! I will remember the chords and the notes but not the rhythm at all and I can never figure out what I thought was so cool before. and you're right that one needs a bassline and it would be good I think. And a better singer LoL

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 1 yearMay 20, 2023 17:38:54 ago (+0/-0)

I been looking but have not found it. I do a really terrible job of naming my song files and I don't know what most if it is until I play it. They have names like ggg, cccc, futhaw, oicks, eat, man, beets, and it is not easy LoL

I do have this one long track that has no drums that I always wanted to add drums but never did.

I can drop the drums out of any songs I do, should you be interested in them. I actually prefer the real drums to the ones I have to use because I don't have anyone to collaborate with.

[ - ] Sleazy 5 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:16:13 ago (+5/-0)

The other night my buddy Chris came over to jam some tunes. It just so happened that a couple other people showed up here before he got here with three cases of beer looking to play some poker. So we all sat down and played cards for some hours. When that was done we tried to play some music, but we were pretty drunk. Here is our version of Billy Joel's the Keyboard Man, we kind of made it through LoL

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:29:56 ago (+2/-0)

"The Piano Man"...

It's one of those songs that, when we do it live, I put down all my instruments and just interact with the audience. It's a good song for that. It's also a good spacer. When I pick up a guitar at the end of it, it's a different guitar. It's a great way to change equipment without interrupting the flow of the show.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:31:08 ago (+2/-0)

I know the name of it, but I did not think we earned the right to call it by the proper name. We only made it through one actual verse, the rest is impromptu vocal lines made up as we went LoL

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:33:14 ago (+2/-0)

I was gonna give you a C for effort and at least having a harmonica on hand.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:41:36 ago (+2/-0)

There is a 12 pack of harmonica's on hand here, well actually I think 6 of them are missing, so a six pack of harmonica's, though it used to hold a dozen of them!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:44:07 ago (+2/-0)

Nice. As long as your harmonica is in the right key, you can't go wrong.

I own an obscene number of harmonicas and can wear the mouth piece that lets me play harmonica while playing guitar. Get a good harmonica holder and skip the cheap shit.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:49:12 ago (+2/-0)

We have one of those Bob Dylan Neal Young type harmonica holders here too! It's probably a cheap one. I don't know, I did not buy it. I think it belongs to Chris

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:50:55 ago (+2/-0)

A good one will be adjustable, sturdy, and well padded. They're not expensive. I think I paid $35 for the last one I purchased.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:52:28 ago (+2/-0)

I am inspecting it as I type. It seems fairly sturdy, the only kind of padding looks to be an IV tube over the metal that goes around your neck LoL

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 21:01:05 ago (+2/-0)

Well, it seems to have worked. I guess that's the ultimate test of quality. Did it do the job? If so, it's good enough! I find the cheap ones move side to side, which is okay but they also tend to move away from you. Adjusting them is futile as they've got enough slack that they just keep moving.

You can kinda deal with the side to side movement. It's not too much. It's the tendency to move away that really kinda sucks.

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1 yearMay 20, 2023 01:13:39 ago (+1/-0)

The atmosphere comes across in the recording well. LOL It's actually pretty good in the beginning. I like covering some keyboard parts on the guitar. I like how it merged into Opie Is An Idiot too. LOL Billy Joel was one of my favorite song writers. Good times!

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 1 yearMay 20, 2023 01:44:30 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks! It's like herding cats to play something when everyone is drunk!

[ - ] CamelsMiller 3 points 1 yearMay 20, 2023 04:25:54 ago (+3/-0)

One night on the other place Crazy (now Sleazy I assume) posted Over the Hills and Far Away, and I said I used to be able to play it quite well. So one night I got good and drunk and tried to play it. It's not as bad as it could be after not having played it in like a decade,
https://soundcloud.com/thewilake/over-the-hills-and-far-away

don't know if I posted that before, can't look it up over "there"

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 1 yearMay 20, 2023 09:24:04 ago (+0/-0)

You could always check the archives at fngt.gq.

And, give yourself some credit - I could easily recognize what you were playing.

[ - ] popticalillusion 0 points 1 yearMay 21, 2023 01:49:41 ago (+0/-0)

I think it's pretty good! Led Zeppelin are one of my favorites. The acoustic guitar will separate the men from the boys. LOL. I hope to hear some more of your stuff in the future.

I didn't like Jimmy's playing when I first started learning guitar. As I got better and started learning some of their music I started to see the talent was much better than I had given credit for in the beginning.

[ - ] popticalillusion 3 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:20:53 ago (+3/-0)

I think I made small playing improvements and got better with using modern production software. My neurology appointment was rescheduled for July, so it will be a while before I know how much damage I have and some hypothesis as to the cause.

Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols Damn. I thought this song would be easy, but I used a different recording procedure this week which made the editing worse. Here's Anarchy In The U.K.!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:36:46 ago (+3/-0)

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1 yearMay 20, 2023 00:58:53 ago (+1/-0)

I like the additional leads. When I get better at carrying the songs, I want to do audio closer to this, where I'm just including what I actually play. I usually have to modify the other tracks some, so that gives me some production practice too. Great job!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:52:06 ago (+3/-0)

By the way, be sure to check out my post. We made a song for you, hopefully hitting your favorite genres as well as we could under the circumstances. That's why I asked what your favorite genre was last week.

[ - ] popticalillusion 3 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 21:26:32 ago (+3/-0)

I am going to listen to everybody's posts after midnight EST this week. I'm streaming right now and my brain can't deal with 2 songs playing at the same time. LOL

Ah, I haven't seen the individual posts that far back. I'll check those out too. That recording of November Rain was really awesome!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 21:30:06 ago (+3/-0)

Oh, there's no reason you can't also cover something someone already covered. It's fine to do so. In fact, we have a limited pool of songs to pick from, so there will be duplicates.

That November Rain was done in a real studio with some of my real musician friends who wanted to hang out for a couple of days while I was in the area. It all just sort of came together nicely and we ended up with that track. I have also covered Jung's version of it, somewhere around here.

And, listen whenever you get time. It's not like the track's going anywhere.

[ - ] popticalillusion 3 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 21:50:37 ago (+3/-0)

For me, recording is always better with friends. I actually don't like the method I use at the moment, but it works for doing it by myself. The Guitar Pro tracks where really meant to help you learn to play the songs, but some of them aren't too bad.

I still have at least 2 more months to kill before I attempt to live with the woman I really like. So, I'll be browsing the archives and using the guitar to keep my motor skills in the left arm as good as possible.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 21:53:43 ago (+3/-0)

I'm sure you'll find a few other uses for nimble fingers after you're living with a lady friend...

Also, I think of making music as being productive. I don't really see it as wasted time - most of the time.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 23:34:19 ago (+2/-0)

If making music is productive then I am actually productive every single day!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1 yearMay 20, 2023 09:27:45 ago (+1/-0)

I think it's productive.

It isn't gainful employment for many folks, but it is productive.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 1 yearMay 20, 2023 15:19:40 ago (+1/-0)

I think so too!

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 1 yearMay 20, 2023 16:49:11 ago (+1/-0)

Imagine being in one of those other class vehicles and all of a sudden 4 or 6 GT3 cars go flying by you and they vanish around the next corner in front of you and when you get around that corner you never see them again until they come up from behind and fly by you again. and you are going 170!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1 yearMay 20, 2023 17:03:25 ago (+1/-0)

Being in a slower class would be terrifying at times. The speed they close at...

They've got a fucking Dacia on the track. The rate of speed during the closing, that delta between the two speeds, is absurd and dangerous. Whoever approved it is a fucking moron. It's gotta be a publicity stunt.

Fortunately, the drivers at this race are used to slow moving vehicles on the track.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 21:54:10 ago (+2/-0)

Hopefully that reply went through. The site was giving me issues for a minute or so.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:31:47 ago (+2/-0)

Welcome to the world of punk... That's a fine choice to cover. They say punk is simple, easy to play. Well, it is - if you already can play in that style of music. Sure, it's simple, but it goes against what many have spent years learning. Getting the tone right is often more challenging than actually playing it.

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 22:06:19 ago (+2/-0)*

I don't really try to match the originals for tone, but set it to how I would prefer it to be. I mixed a track with the bridge pick-up and another with the neck pick-up on the same amp and distortion pedal settings. No effects on my guitar track for this recording.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 22:23:28 ago (+2/-0)

These days, you can record it clean and just add the effect. That's easy enough these days.

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 23:22:27 ago (+2/-0)

That's how I will be doing it at the moment. I miss the effects processor I used to have. I might get something later on, there's a pawn shop right across the street. If I do that and repair my main amp, I could have some pretty good sounding stuff, for cheap!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1 yearMay 20, 2023 09:26:07 ago (+1/-0)

What's wrong with your amp?

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1 yearMay 20, 2023 20:36:24 ago (+1/-0)

The (Guitar) input jack got bumped during a move and broke. It was a plastic material and was mounted to the a digital board for output. I had attempted to replace it with a more durable metal jack, with old school output but my wiring must be wrong.

I'm going to remove all the new wiring I did and use the other (CD/MP3) input jack that still works, connected to the practice amp's (Headphone) output. I'm certain that it will be limited in it's functions, but I really only want to use it for the better speaker and possibly function like a power amp for the small practice amp. I think it will eliminate my channel switching function when I remove the attempted repair. If the Spring Reverb still works that would be a bonus.

The chain would be [Metal Muff tube distortion box] + [Kustom Dart 10 Solid State Amp] + [Ibenez TBX30R Tube Amp]. So there are plenty of tonal variations that can be dialed in along the line.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1 yearMay 20, 2023 21:16:37 ago (+1/-0)

That sucks. Modern amps are a lot more complicated than they used to be. But, if you end up needing to, there are forums out there who will help you get up and running again with the proper output jack. Try The Gear Page for one.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 20:31:49 ago (+2/-0)

Cool man. Good job. I want to be! In pussy!

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 21:32:37 ago (+2/-0)

Thanks! Just add your lyrics in and repost with the updated version. Or redo the whole thing, I heard some of your rock stuff in the archives, and it was pretty damn good!

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 21:33:16 ago (+2/-0)

If I get fucked up enough I just might sing along!

[ - ] ChatGPT 2 points 1 yearMay 19, 2023 23:28:41 ago (+2/-0)

Sheeeeit! This song came to me when I was watching Charles get crowned. My first thought was their God Save the Queen.

Dude that was great. Believe it or not, they played the fuck outta this song on FM radio when it first came out. I even bought the album. Good record man.

Too bad Charles had a 'murican nigger sing at his wing-ding instead of one of their own like Sir McCartney or Sir John or Johnny Rotten.

I reckon he's a woke monarch.

[ - ] popticalillusion 0 points 1 yearMay 20, 2023 01:26:23 ago (+0/-0)

Thanks!I have a start at least. I love the attitude in Punk Rock music, just the kind of attitude that would tell Charles too piss off!

Charles is probably only woke because of all the dirt they have on him and Jimmy Saville. He could have called in many other artists to play, and I'm sure they would have done it. He'd probably get a long with Elton John for some after party activities as well.

[ - ] popticalillusion 0 points 1 yearMay 20, 2023 20:49:16 ago (+0/-0)

This turned out worse than I thought. I suspect my hearing aids were losing power during the production part, so I didn't notice how my guitar playing was out of sync on the 2 tracks. After charging the hearing aids and listening to it, I heard way more than I had before. It won't bother me if someone points things out to me, because I may have missed them. These are my first attempts to record with the hearing aids and glasses I have to wear now.
