Hmm... I'm not sure if you realize this, but today is Friday. That means it's time to smoke crack and worship Satan! Wait, no... No, that's hot what today is for. Today is when we have the Friday Night Guitar Thread! We like players of all skill levels, so come on in!

submitted by TheRealBuddha to Guitar 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 19:59:59 ago (+23/-2)     (Guitar)

Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Talk.lol go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @Sleazy or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

Hello and welcome to another Friday Night Guitar Thread! Like normal, we'll go ahead and get you started!

Initially, I didn't have anything new for this thread - but I did have some stubs and some time. So, while a bit rushed, we'll go ahead and share something new (and original) this week. It's nice to share original work, right? So, why not share some this time around!

A Lesson in G min (The Usual Suspects)

While that's a bit rushed, we hope you still enjoy it. It's not nearly as complicated as it sounds. If you can play Thunderstruck, you can probably get your head around this one.

Rock on, Goats! Rock the fuck on!

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:48:51 ago (+4/-0)

Well that was totally fucking awesome!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:55:17 ago (+2/-0)

It was mostly done when I said I didn't have anything new. So, it wasn't too much more work.

Glad ya liked it.

[ - ] ChatGPT 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 23:27:06 ago (+2/-0)

That is some fast guitar riffin' man. Have you seen that latest guitar whiz kid, Matteo Mancuso? He plays fast as hell like you and doesn't use a pick. Electric guitar fingerpickin'. All the superstars rave about him.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 23:35:09 ago (+1/-0)

Onw of these days I'll do a speed test/show off. The standard is Flight of the Bumblebee.

I don't really worry about sped. If you practice it long enough, you will get speed.

This is true for someone playing a 3 chord song.

This is true for a master class where everyone has played for a couple of decades and is paying to be there.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 3 points 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 03:49:34 ago (+3/-0)

Heh, my speed is around one chord/note per couple of seconds lol.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 11:43:28 ago (+2/-0)

Your goal is to repeat it enough for it to become muscle memory. From there, it's just more practice to start going faster. When I'm first learning a song, I start off slow - usually aiming for about half the speed of the original. I then work on it until I have the whole song committed to memory and my fingers ready to play it. With this brings speed.

[ - ] popticalillusion 0 points 11 monthsJun 5, 2023 19:13:20 ago (+0/-0)

TheRealBuhddha is right. I hadn't played for around 10 years and when I picked it back up the hands still knew how to make the chords or notes I wanted to play. I just need to keep practicing in order to get them down smoothly and with proper technique.

[ - ] ChatGPT 2 points 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 00:34:16 ago (+2/-0)

Here he is flying all over the place.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 11:35:04 ago (+1/-0)

With some diligent practice, you could probably be doing much of that inside of a year, maybe sooner.

Also, who the hell is that on the drums? The drummer is playing without any sense of rhythm, having nothing to do with what the guitarist is playing. The guitar is okay. The drumming is downright horrible. I hope they do better elsewhere.

(And, man, didn't I type like shit last night.)

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 00:31:50 ago (+2/-0)

Sweet! I thought it had a Thunderstruck kind of feel, listening to it, but still different with all the other work you all did on this one. It sounded spot on throughout, so if you rushed you still did quality work in getting a great sounding recording.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 11:31:00 ago (+2/-0)

It's one of those songs that sounds tougher than it is. A lot of it is playing a fretted note and then playing the open string.

So, like, 5 - 0, 7 - 0, 12 - 0, etc...

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 21:58:49 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah, but it's effective for slow fuckers like me. On a good day I can get the intro of Thunderstruck pretty good. I used to have a version of Eruption that was good sounding, but not the same as EVH because I can't get all his different shit good enough to do it up to speed and correctly. LOL

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 11 monthsJun 4, 2023 07:01:38 ago (+1/-0)

That's why most of my playing is dedicated practicing and not noodling or settling for what I already have mastered. There are still things I don't do as well as I should be able to do, like sight-reading.

The rust knocks away quickly, I've found - but I've never taken a 25 year break.

But, you'll get back to your previous skill levels pretty easily. You will need to be patient with yourself.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:16:40 ago (+2/-0)

That's not that bad at all after 25 years, sounded like fun to me!

Sounds pretty good to me. The recording comes through really nice too. I think you're ready to make some tracks now!

you had me at smoke crack ...

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:35:59 ago (+2/-0)

Too bad I can't type worth a fuck today. It's awkward, with the laptop off to one side. Ah well...

Life's short, party hard!

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:04:27 ago (+4/-0)

Hello everyone. Here is a song that I wrote and recorded a while back.

It's about something I think we all can relate to...

Crazy Women

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:08:58 ago (+2/-0)

It took a minute, but I recognized it. I've heard that one before - both good and appropriate.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:13:31 ago (+2/-0)

Awesome!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:40:13 ago (+1/-0)

Well, it must be good if I remember it.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:49:35 ago (+2/-0)

Hell yeah!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:56:22 ago (+3/-0)

I think there's a song about how women ain't nothing but trouble.

Of course, we gotta put up with 'em, as the only other options are being gay or being celibate. I don't really want to be either of those two things.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:58:43 ago (+2/-0)

I am not gay. I do not want to be celibate.

I pretty much ignore most of their bullshit so that I get the pleasures

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 21:05:39 ago (+2/-0)

No matter how much you try to ignore it, they almost always mean more drama. Is it worth it? Well, maybe? It is possible to find chicks who aren't insane. Sure, it takes a bit more patience and (sometimes) effort, but I've concluded that it's best to avoid the drama if you can.

Also, the car this week is one you're pretty much never gonna guess. It's expensive and on-par with a Koenigsegg.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 21:08:51 ago (+2/-0)

is it the P1?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 21:26:52 ago (+2/-0)

No, it's much more awesome than that.

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 00:48:18 ago (+2/-0)

That one was pretty rocking. Your musical diversity is pretty good, where your playing sounds great in whatever style you choose to play. Of course the lyrics are good and relatable too.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 03:13:06 ago (+2/-0)

Why thank you. That sounds like a hell of a compliment to me, and I appreciate it!

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 22:09:17 ago (+1/-0)

I remember your cover of Dead Flowers a few years back, that was pretty good, so now The Rolling Stones version is a regular in my playlist for my radio. Plus I've heard some of the archived stuff, so I've heard a good variety of tunes.

That woman who used to sing was really good too. Hopefully some more great and beginning players join up. I've been trying to encourage musicians I know or run into to come join the fun.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 22:23:10 ago (+1/-0)

Which woman, I wonder. Do you remember the song the woman was singing?

And I agree with you, the more the merrier!

[ - ] bosunmoon 1 point 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:33:25 ago (+1/-0)

Dang that's hard to listen to. I guess it's a good thing it's not friday night singing thread.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:41:31 ago (+2/-0)

I never claimed to be a good singer, but I dont have anyone else willing to sing the lyrics that I write, and someone has to do it

[ - ] bosunmoon 3 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:52:30 ago (+3/-0)

I'll fuckin do it.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 21:10:41 ago (+1/-0)

go for it!

[ - ] Sector7 3 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:35:01 ago (+3/-0)

𝕋𝔾𝕀𝐅𝐍𝐆𝐓!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:38:24 ago (+3/-0)

Every week, without fail, we have the FNGT somewhere. Ideally, we'll be able to keep that going here - as Poal turned into a site for whiney cunts.

[ - ] Sector7 3 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:51:56 ago (+3/-0)

We all appear to be somewhat at the whim of tides. Might have to recruit some kid to run it, but I wonder if a FNGT.com (for sale) site could become a thing. Would at least be a stable home, and who knows what might develop. That is, if you were looking for a lot of extra work, and grief from disgruntled internet people.

Anyway, cheers! \o

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:57:27 ago (+3/-0)

We currently have fngt.gq, which is adequate. I don't really want to draw attention to it, other than mostly serving as an archive and a backup to host the thread if we really need to.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:01:20 ago (+3/-0)

Also, I was within 1 second of 20:00...

I like having that feature back. Poal didn't have that feature. Now I know how close I am to being exact.

It's a tough thing to do, getting it on time. Try it!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:00:14 ago (+2/-0)

I think I fixed it now.

Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
Just the two of us
(Just the two of us)
Just the two of us
Building castles in the sky
Just the two of us
You and I

Hum along if you know this one.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:41:21 ago (+2/-0)

While I kinda know the song, I don't know where I know it from. Was it an intro to a TV show, or is my brain melted beyond repair?

[ - ] Sector7 4 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 21:07:22 ago (+4/-0)

Harlem Native Who Wrote 'Just the Two of Us' Song Now a Viral Sensation. NEW YORK - At 84 years old, William Salter is finding himself in the limelight again as a viral sensation on Tik Tok, where his granddaughter has put a new audience on to his connection to a classic song he wrote decades ago.

https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=6POZlJAZsok

Not a guitar song, but your 'just two of us' triggered that memory.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 21:26:29 ago (+1/-0)

Ah... Well, for one reason or another, I know of the song. I don't know why, but I do.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 21:13:22 ago (+2/-0)

It was featured in the Futurama season 7 episode, "Fry and Leela's Big Fling"

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 21:28:34 ago (+2/-0)

Well, I have seen all the Futurama episodes but I don't think that's where I picked it up.

I'm pretty old, so I've had the chance to 'pick up' a lot of material in a lot of different places. I am at least vaguely familiar with a bunch of music.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 21:31:20 ago (+2/-0)

I just naturally assumed you had seen that Futurama episode, at least I was right about that

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 21:34:13 ago (+2/-0)

Oh, damned right. I love Futurama. I am also a pretty big Animaniacs fan. Much of what I would normally watch would be that sort of stuff. I did finally watch/catch up on The Solar Opposites which is pretty good and from the same folks that do Rick And Morty.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 21:36:54 ago (+2/-0)

I have never even heard of the solar opposites LoL

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 21:40:38 ago (+2/-0)

It is REALLY good. Trust me, I've watched all the television over the past few years.

Except, I don't think this was ever on TV. It's on Hulu.

Also, the song was played during the late 70s or during the 80s. I heard it on the radio. I'm sure of it.

Like, I'm betting it got radio play in those years. I'm 99.999% sure it was late 70s or mid 80s, maybe until late 80s. So, I'm going to say 1975 to 1990. It was on the radio and kinda popular.

That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Given the song's style, it can't be narrowed down further (by me).

[ - ] ChatGPT 1 point 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 23:50:59 ago (+1/-0)

Yes. This was a big hit. Not sure who sang it. Bill Withers? Great song. Will last forever.

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 01:01:51 ago (+2/-0)

I had a busy week, for me anyways, so all I did was practice the guitar and attempt to improve my editing skills. The microphone was still giving me some issues so I didn't attempt to to record or figure out what's up with it. I put my repair time in on my bicycle after being forced to ride the city bus around town.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 11:38:38 ago (+2/-0)

At least you got to practice, which is far more important than recording.

I haven't ridden on public transportation in a long, long time.

When the missus and I were in New York City, we stayed in an expensive hotel - up near the top floor. She wanted to experience that 'cause there are no tall buildings around here. She'd never been higher than the 2nd story of a building.

Well, she also wanted to ride in the subway. I showed her some videos of how fucking disgusting that is, and we didn't go for a ride on the trains.

[ - ] popticalillusion 0 points 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 21:48:54 ago (+0/-0)

We have a single route train line, but I would still have to take the bus over to the rich folks neighborhood to get to the nearest station. We have 5 floors, and 2 of them are reserved for Military Veterans. I bet the big hotels are an interesting experience, although I don't think I would like living in one of those.

I could use the exercise the bike will offer. There's no gym and the pool has been closed since I moved in. LOL There's not really many hills around and they're not very big. Hopefully by the time I move, I will have the car my family is giving me.

[ - ] bosunmoon 1 point 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:28:34 ago (+1/-0)

Too many rules on your website you old faggot.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 20:37:23 ago (+2/-0)

Yeah, I'm okay with that. I'm perfectly okay with that. It's decidedly not a free speech zone and we make sure you know this before you even begin.

In fact, we have a set of defenses to ensure you're not a member. That's how much we appreciate this.

[ - ] bosunmoon 2 points 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 21:16:51 ago (+2/-0)

Sounds kinda gay.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 11 monthsJun 2, 2023 21:31:51 ago (+1/-0)

It kinda is but the last thing I'm interested in fucking with is a 'free speech' zone. Fuck that. I've got far more enjoyable things to do.

Besides, I don't actually like any of you that much. I did offer to fund at least one of the Voat clones (I forget which one) but I was told they didn't need my money. Which is good... I'd have had to set up a fake identity and then fund it that way.

That's far easier than you might imagine. Your credit card company will likely issue a credit card under any name you want. They won't even try to verify the ID, they'll just issue it - as it's on your account and they really don't give a fuck.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 2 points 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 03:52:35 ago (+2/-0)

We have to start gatekeeping anyway you look at it. Simply allowing in the undesirables is what got us into this mess in the first place.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 11 monthsJun 3, 2023 11:46:08 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah, I'm not interested in actually running a free speech site. I did offer to quietly fund one.

Also, hopefully, I didn't blow up your inbox. I typed a fairly long reply and then the site ate it when I hit the post button. I had to refresh a couple of times before the site loaded properly.
