Seems kinda odd that with all the talk about an "internet blackout" that reddit, one of the biggest websites on the internet, goes dark (private) for most of its subs.

No, the subs that participated were run by individuals, some of whom got their subs taken away from them by Reddit in retaliation. The site is losing money and they’re getting desperate. Expect it to get sold or subjected to more drastic changes as traffic dwindles.
