I hate it when people describe others as a narcissist. It's like defining someone as a liar. We all lie. We are all narcissistic sometimes. Very few people would be completely defined as such.

Actually. I don't think the marriage failed. I'm an optimist. I carry alot of guilt however I don't think I'm the only one to blame. You might be right. But the only thing stopping reconciliation in my mind is me.

The protagonist is conflicted. On the one hand he defends himself:

against the vitriolic accusations, the recriminations, of his wife, with equally savage rejoinders:
"the weight of hate and spite";
but part of him holds back as he remembers the good times they had:
"you do not mean any of the hate you say";"you hear the echos that remain";
And then another unfair blow lays him low and the anger wells up again:
"but pain makes you relapse";
Finally the realisation the relationship is doomed:
"your life will never be the same".
