Oh, guess what? Chicken butt! Ha! I crack me up. Either way, it's Friday and that means it's time for the Friday Night Guitar Thread! You know how to make music, but do you know how to share it with your peers?

submitted by TheRealBuddha to Guitar 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 19:56:51 ago (+17/-2)     (Guitar)

Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Talk.lol go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @Sleazy or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

I did before and after mixes of this song. This is the Guitar Pro version of Def Leppard's Armageddon It (GP). Then I listened to the original recording, decided on some changes in the sound, and replaced most of the guitar tracks. Def Leppard Armageddon It

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:45:29 ago (+1/-0)

What made you decide to change it?

Also, how are you liking Guitar Pro?

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:21:28 ago (+2/-0)

I like the sound of the distorted guitar tracks better than the original's clean track used in the beginning, and I wanted to convey a heavier sounding mix over all. When I learned songs to play live years ago, I didn't always have tapes to listen to original recordings so some of them came out different because of that. Sometimes I want to play as recorded and other times I like to change things up.

The Guitar Pro tracks are OK for learning and less than ideal for what I am using them for. I load them in MuseScore on Linux, so I would like to learn how to edit them to make them better. I still need to practice much more to improve my technique (If possible) as there are some sloppy and chopped chords and notes still in there.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:30:10 ago (+1/-0)

I've never really played with MuseScore and I do a whole lot in Linux. Hell, I've written hundreds of Linux articles, am on the Lubuntu team, moderate at linux.org, and even have my own @ubuntu.com email address.

LOL I should probably play with it at some point.

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 8, 2023 00:58:45 ago (+1/-0)

Oh cool, Lubuntu is a good distro! I got in on testing the Ultimate Arch Linux and have been using it ever since. I actually suck at installing Arch from scratch, so for people like me, it's a good way to get what I wanted with an easier install method. Most apps will install and work fine, but Tuxguitar wasn't one of them, so I ended up with Musecore and actually like it better.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 8, 2023 13:36:05 ago (+1/-0)

I test the daily Lubuntu images. I find and file bugs.

[ - ] popticalillusion 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 9, 2023 20:13:23 ago (+0/-0)

I had installed Flatpak to get some photo editing software, and today I went browsing through their apps on Flathub. I was able too install Tuxguitar and also found Powertabeditor for A variety of file formats including .pt2, .ptb, .gp3, .gp4, .gp5, .gpx, and .gp format songs to be displayed in tabs and notes. That should speed up the learning of songs I have never played or have trouble hearing certain parts correctly.
I packed up the guitar gear today, so I will have time to work with the software I have and find what suites my needs the best.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:10:50 ago (+1/-0)

Sounds cool, I was singing along!

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:27:51 ago (+1/-0)

They wrote some catchy tunes. I learned how to isolate the vocals from the original recordings, but I haven't found a good way to sync them up with the GP version of the song as the tempos are slightly off.
I like their old stuff that had a less polished sound to it than Hysteria. Let It Go was one that rocks pretty good.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:29:19 ago (+1/-0)

The High and Dry album was awesome

[ - ] ChatGPT 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 23:45:25 ago (+1/-0)

Lotta time and effort went into that. Well done.

[ - ] popticalillusion 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 8, 2023 01:07:57 ago (+0/-0)

Thanks for checking it out. I'm still learning a lot about the software and need more practice with it and the playing too. LOL
I'm not expecting perfection, but I do want to do better. I had a nerve conductivity test yesterday and the tech spent some extra time shocking my left arm. It seems to be the worse to me and I suspect they saw something that wasn't right and repeated certain spots to be sure of the readings.

Guitar joke: What’s the difference between a lawnmower and an Electric Guitar?

You can tune a lawnmower.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:21:47 ago (+3/-0)

You can't tune a fish, but you can tune a piano!

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:22:42 ago (+4/-0)

You can tune a fish if you play bass!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:25:29 ago (+3/-0)

Oh, entirely off topic...

I was looking up song lyrics. I think it's "sneaky snake" but I looked up 'sleazy snake' 'cause I didn't remember the lyrics and your username made me think of it.

Well, I have Google's AI thing enabled and among the results it gave me something like:

"Sleaze Snake is in Green Bay, Wisconsin and looking to start a band."

I was like, huh? I wonder who that could be. More importantly, I wonder how Google knows this.

[ - ] popticalillusion 4 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:33:51 ago (+4/-0)

Google gets creepier all the time. Maybe they scraped info off of some sites and the AI pieced it together in that manor. AI has been busted out for for scraping user data across the Internet, which is supposedly why Twitter changed their procedures last week.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:41:41 ago (+2/-0)

This is indeed their AI reply. It's pretty damned clever.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:11:53 ago (+2/-0)

At least they did not give out my address!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:14:04 ago (+1/-0)

LOL Maybe if they did you'd attract other players who want to start a band.

I suspect it's from something you said as a blurb on your SoundCloud pages. Google just scraped it and ended up with that.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:27:44 ago (+3/-0)

How the fuck does google know that?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:40:22 ago (+3/-0)

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:44:19 ago (+3/-0)

that is insane

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:54:05 ago (+2/-0)

Right? I just happened to recall the lyrics of a song (improperly) and it led to that.

This is the song I was actually looking for:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aI7aeKCqkKE

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:09:18 ago (+2/-0)

I am not familiar with that song of his. When I was a kid my parents would play Tom T Hall tapes when ever we went up north to go camping and things like that, so I am surprised I don't recognize this one. I might just have to tell Chris we are playing this one

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:11:26 ago (+1/-0)

The reason I recalled it was your username and then realizing it wasn't that, and figured it'd make a good song for you and him.

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 8, 2023 01:13:19 ago (+1/-0)

LOL! I heard that one a lot when I was a kid. I think it was on a compilation pack I had of kids songs, along with Jim Neighbors and lots of other artists.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 8, 2023 13:37:15 ago (+1/-0)

I remembered the song partially, but had 'sleazy snake' stuck in my head - likely due to @sleazy.

Ah well... At least I was able to finally remember the correct name. More often than not, I'd have not been able to do so.

[ - ] Portmanure 4 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:23:17 ago (+4/-0)

Hehe, Tune in next week for my next weak guitar joke

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 4 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:26:17 ago (+4/-0)

We're here every Friday night.

[ - ] Portmanure 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:44:18 ago (+3/-0)

I came here for an argument not a disagreement.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:47:29 ago (+5/-0)

Oh, that's two doors down and on the left.

[ - ] ChatGPT 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 23:42:53 ago (+1/-0)

Was that a Joe Walsh album?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 8, 2023 13:35:16 ago (+0/-0)

It's an old, old joke. It looks like it was an REO Speedwagon album, however.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:05:03 ago (+3/-0)

Hello to everyone. This week has been nuts so I will share a song my buddy Chris and I played a while back that has never been heard here, Daniel Johnson's Mean Girls Give Pleasure

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:18:19 ago (+2/-0)

Heh... I've heard that song before. Not your version, but I've heard the song before.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:25:24 ago (+3/-0)

Daniel Johnson wrote some pretty damned good songs

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:27:01 ago (+1/-0)

I don't know much about them, but I do know that song.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:30:08 ago (+3/-0)

He was some retarded guy who spent all his time in the basement of his parents house writing and recording songs, and he got them put out and people went nuts, saying how great the songs were. And his parents were all, who know he was down there creating a masterpiece.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 4 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:41:12 ago (+4/-0)

Huh... I'll have to look deeper.

As if by magic, my connection has slowed to a crawl. It's as though the cell company knows it is Friday and I have shit to do.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:42:07 ago (+2/-0)

I wonder is tourists are stealing your bandwidth

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:47:14 ago (+2/-0)

Probably. It has sucked all week, but it's worse now. This week has probably 10x the usual population, so it kinda sucks but we do need the tourism money.

Also, I saw this video this morning. I was up early to work on my site 'cause there was a major outage.

That is quite the interesting description of driving one of those cars

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:05:59 ago (+2/-0)

Yeah... I drove an F3 car for a weekend which was pretty fun and even that was a challenge.

Everyone thinks they can hop into a race car and do well. No, no they can't.

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:45:19 ago (+2/-0)

Sounds really good. I liked the sound of your recording a lot. The background info explains the lyrics. I might have to check some of Daniel's stuff out with an interesting story like that.

[ - ] ChatGPT 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 23:44:37 ago (+2/-0)

This a good song. Your rhythm guitar is excellent.

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 23:55:46 ago (+0/-0)

Thank you.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 19:57:08 ago (+5/-0)

Hello and welcome to another FNGT! I have something that hasn't been shared in a while, a lovely little classical piece that's actually hard (but fun) to play.

Bach BWV 1004 (TB)

Y'all should enjoy that.

Rock on, Goats! Rock on!

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:23:37 ago (+3/-0)

That is so beautiful. I love Bach. Great rendition!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:26:44 ago (+2/-0)

Thanks. As I listened, I realized we've gotten much better at recording.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:48:01 ago (+2/-0)

You didn't like the sound?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:54:53 ago (+2/-0)

It could have been so much more crisp and clear. It sounds muddy and with some echo that I don't like.

Today, we'd have done a much better recording.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:00:55 ago (+3/-0)

It sounded great to me!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:06:16 ago (+2/-0)

LOL Maybe my ears have improved.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:09:39 ago (+1/-0)

That does not seem likely LoL

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:12:33 ago (+2/-0)

By that I mean I've improved my ability to listen, not that my hearing is better exactly.

This recording is just muddy and shitty. It was like four years ago. We could do much better now.

Plus, I've invested in all sorts of kit since then.

[ - ] popticalillusion 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 20:58:28 ago (+3/-0)

Great work! Bach was an awesome composer. The recording and playing is awesome sounding. One of my goals is to record just the one instrument that sounds great by itself, with minimal post production.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 21:04:56 ago (+3/-0)

I really don't like the recording. It could be so much cleaner. We've come a long way with our recording and this is just muddy and echoing. I may redo it at some point.

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 8, 2023 22:54:37 ago (+1/-0)

I think we are our own worst critics at times, I feel like I am never really finished trying to make the recording better. I was thinking about editing my recordings I have done so far, and packing up the gear until after I move. The average listeners don't know as much about the music as we do, so they expect less. On the other hand, we may intend to use the recordings for an audience that does have higher expectations. LOL

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 8, 2023 23:01:55 ago (+1/-0)

I think I could do this song more justice. I'm not happy with the recording, but I suspect that's because we've improved our recording techniques. I'm listening with a more refined ear.

[ - ] ChatGPT 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 7, 2023 23:34:11 ago (+2/-0)

Love that stuff. Ol' Bach would have been one hell of a guitar player. Good thing he was familiar with the lute to give us guitar dudes some tunes that fall under your fret hand.
