I read a book about him and a couple other hackers. All he was is a social engineer along with being a script kiddie. Nothing wrong with that, but that isn't what I consider impressive.

Kevin Mitnick wasn't much of a hacker. He never created any tools or code to help break into secure areas, he used software and scripts other people created. He was known as a "script kiddie". He was nothing more than that. His case was used as an example by the justice department for what could happen to you if you did this sort of stuff. We can see how well that cautionary story narrative worked out.

Social Engineering is a form of Hacking people. Hacking cell phones is hacking. He was As much a hacker as Snowden. He did shit that exposed AT&T and the FBI. Give the dude credit.

Agree with what you said, but he excelled in the social engineering aspect (which you left out). That is what made him dangerous to the state, etc.
