I'm thinking about buying a chunk of remote land to use as a vacation getaway spot. Eventually I plan to build an off-grid cabin but in the meantime I want to rent a self-storage unit that is close to the land for storing things like camping gear, ATVs, etc. I have never used a self-storage unit - Does anyone have advice or suggestions?
Sure, a determined thief can still steal your stuff. But will they? I think at some point you just take reasonable precautions and accept the risk. If you're really concerned, you're going to have to haul your stuff out there every time.
Put a couple trail cameras up if you do, if anything is stolen local law enforcement might recognize them if it's a rural area, and might even be willing to help.
Will echo shipping container idea. You will always need this on your land anyway, it's like an extra garage. I had my crap in a storage bin in MA, sold the house and put all my crap in storage. Crappy facility. Bought a container for like 2500 - pretty new condition and it stores the stuff better than the facility, less bugs, etc. Plus more secure, tbh. Now I am in NH

Yes and yes, about 15 years ago an employee looted my storage locker and made off with a bunch of electronics and deep sea fishing equipment at the time.
Odds are your stuff would be safe. But don't put anything you "can't lose" in one. They do catch on fire when some dickhead stores gasoline or explosives. People cut though the sheetrock walls to pillage units. Plus everything @Cantaloupe said.
Just remember that they're going to raise your rent after 6 months and then annually every year by approximately 20%. So whatever you're storing you're going to be repurchasing every single month. So make absolutely sure that the things you're storing are things that you would actually buy again every single month. If there's anything going into that storage that you would not pay $65 or $50 or whatever $300 whatever your storage is going to cost if there was anything going in there that you wouldn't pay that much for to repurchase every month then do not store it. Take it directly to the thrift shop or the dump. And before you store anything like old TVs or old kitchenware go to your local thrift shop and see what those things are going for right now and realize that if you ever want another one you can go buy one for 30 bucks at your thrift shop so you do not want to be spending money to store it every month.
These storage places rely on people putting things in storage and then being lazy and never ever wanting to go back in there and do the work to get it out. So it just keeps hitting your credit card or your bank account or however you're doing your automatic withdrawals every month.
So really really really get rid of everything that you don't want and can't repurchase at a thrift shop. Don't keep old lamps don't keep old TVs don't keep old clothes don't keep old knick knacks don't keep on kitchen goods. If you can buy it use it a thrift shop don't keep it.
Mentally it's very easy to put things in storage but it's extremely difficult both physically and mentally to get up the energy and discipline to get them out.
So they have you every month paying them.
Get rid of the stuff now do not store it. There is almost nothing you could possibly own that you would want to store that you couldn't go by at a thrift shop a year from now instead of storing it. Don't store stuff. Trust me I've made this mistake.

So what is your suggestion? I understand that there is always a theft risk, but this is kind of the point... The land is far enough away and remote enough that I don't want to have to bring an entire trailer of stuff every time I go. I could drop a small shed on the property but that would be way less secure that a storage unit

not anywhere close to this land... when I say 'remote' I mean that the 'town' this land is in consists of a gastation/general store, a post office, a hardware store, and a church. In theory there is a town building but it is not on the one paved road in town.
You are probably going to have to use a storage facility then. I'd do a bunch of research on what facility is the best and most trustworthy in your area.

A friend of mine built a self storage facility. I thought that’s what you were talking about.
He said it’s the smartest financial thing he’s ever done. The easiest money he ever made. He paid the mortgage off in a few years and now has a business with almost no expenses but a steady income.

Get a 2x4 storage locker if you have smaller stuff.
