I was in Venice Beach hanging out with this hot college chick from Illinois right after the homeless camps got broken up a couple of years ago. Millionaires resented bums being able to have most of the amenities of that environment for free. Whatever else can be said about it hostility to homelessness is in a real sense a byproduct of our materialist, conformist, middle class culture.

I've test driven the lifestyle. And there are a lot of ways to live it. But after some experience and study I'll say this:

1. You better be in good health and male.

2. If you have a vehicle you'll probably have serious parking issues. If no vehicle you're better off getting rid of all of your possessions and walk around with the clothes on your back.

3. Get involved in things, activities, any available programs.

4. Stay ahead of the elements. The weather can kill you. Pick a place that is dry and warm. Just move to California really.

5. Prepare to live extremely minimally. You have no rent, utilities, many expenses, or a lot of the conventional worries of a 'normal' existence.

6. Don't be a drunk, a druggie.

7. If you have a job or some kind of money coming in it is almost easy. Otherwise you might have to conserve energy and hang around soup kitchens downtown. Dumpster diving is a possibility. Certainly for clothes.

8. Use it as a means to self-improve. Of course I'm a revolutionary. For me adding free time is a means to an end. But it gives you time to do things one would rather be doing, plus it can provide mobility in a major way.
