I've been wearing glasses for 20+ years and have had the same prescription for at least 10. I still mainly just need them to read or to drive at night. And I don't even have to have them while driving unless I'm somewhere unfamiliar and need to read street signs (the ones on the corner, not the big fucking overhead ones).
I thoroughly prefer contacts. I have the transitions lenses that turn almost black in sunlight. I was chatting with a friend of mine, very devout Christian, and I had forgotten to tell him about them and he saw my eyes basically go black and he about freaked out. 10/10, would do again.
Long term eyesight depends more on genetic factors than external use, but naturally, you'll be able to tell pretty well what is damaging your eyesight long term over short term.
It's a matter of physics. You can't change the shape of the layers of your eye by "exercising" it, or change the angle the light hits your eye.
Lasik surgery physically shaves of the top layer of your eye like the curvature of a lens. When it doesn't work well, it doesn't work well permanently.

I was really near-sighted, about four years after starting work on computers. I was in my very early 20’s. Before that, I was about 20/40. Went to 20/200 & 20/300, partly I believe due to me starting contacts.
Had lasix when I was about 40. Worked well. Went to 20/20 & 20/25-20/30. Some days I could see better. After 15 years or so, I could no longer see up close, and the computer screen is just too close that I had to get cheaters. Faced another lasix or getting real glasses.

Said fuckit, went without. I see just fine now.
Take that for what it’s worth.
