Are These Hornets? Or Just Big Ass Bumblebees?

Can't tell they might be yellow jacket hornets which will swarm you and repeatedly sting you. I walked across a ground hive one day and they got me over ten times. Now I'm allergic to bee stings. The best way to get rid of them is to find the ground hive, wait until it's cool and dark and throw like 5 gallons of hot soapy bleach water into the hive all at once-run! Do it a couple times in a row, should get rid of that hive.

You don't have to run if you put a window screen over the hole before you use the water. Also, you don't need bleach, just soapy water, it doesn't even have to be hot water. Just an FYI for future reference.

They could be carpenter bees, but I cannot tell from the distance. If they are constantly challenging each other, probably carpenter bees. Carpenter bees cannot sting, but like to hover in front of your face if you are in their territory.
