What's your climate like? And how often do you need to water them? I've considered it myself.
Also, have you ever read Pynchon's novel "Gravity's Rainbow"? Not relevant to the above, but the first few chapters were about Englishmen who grew bananas in a hothouse during WWII. I thought it was funny as hell.
It's pretty temperate and frequently humid. A few years ago, we had a really long dry stretch there, so we did occasionally water them. I am not sure if we really HAD to, but we wanted the bananas to grow and not with and drop off... The missus made a big weird bananabread cake thing which was awesome, so it was worth it.
Haven't watered it in a couple years now, and it still produces bananas constantly. We had a nice rainy season this year, though.
That book rings a bell, I might have. The office is a mess and the bookshelves are all disorganized still from when ma-in-law moved in and messed everything all up... I might just buy a new copy to be sure.
Thanks. I used to live in New Orleans. Constant freakin' humidity. Drove me crazy, but the gardenias where I lived loved it, so when I would come home, I'd be overwhelmed with the most beautiful, fragrant gardenia scent I'd ever encountered. My wife used to sell Plumeria, which was well suited to the area and it thrived there. I always wondered why no one ever planted bananas.
I don't mind giving plants I love a lot of water, even though I live in Southern California. I might give it a try.
Just to caution you, "Gravity's Rainbow" is very funny, but a real mindfuck. But the first few chapters are great.
When you apply for citizenship in the Ethno-State, there are many feats of endurance you must pass. Eating bacon without complaint is one of those tests.
