She probably has terrible credit and a history of late payments. It's not just a matter of being able to scrape up rent money every month, it's showing you're a stable person who pays his bills. It's not a great system, but it's what we all have to deal with.

[ - ] xachariah 1 point 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 16:50:30 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah, trusting that someone can pay you $1400 a month for 6 months is one thing, especially if you have have 1st month/last month/security deposit.

Trusting a random slag to pay you $950 for the next 30 years is a much bigger ask.

Imagine how stupid you have to be to equate ownership with rental. Rentals have a cost associated with the owner performing maintenance, property tax, and so on.

If you want the discount rate for owning a property, you get the bits and bobs that go with it.

Until then, stop the false equivalency bullshit.

Owning kicks ass. Proud to take care if my house. Renting only happened because we were young abd broke.

[ - ] TheNoticing 4 points 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 12:03:55 ago (+4/-0)

If you fail to pay "property tax," the government will "seize" your land you "own."

You don't own your house, you rent it from the government.

[ - ] SilentByAssociation 2 points 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 12:43:09 ago (+2/-0)

A land patent will allegedly cure that property tax problem you have.

[ - ] Fascinus 1 point 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 12:47:33 ago (+1/-0)

I've heard the same.

Would be very surprised to learn of anyone actually being granted one these days.

Do you happen to know of any such cases?

[ - ] SilentByAssociation 2 points 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 13:18:04 ago (+2/-0)

I've heard anecdotal stories. Kind of like non-filers or the "Tax Honesty" crowd, but a bit more obscure.

Ron Gibson is a name that my dad introduced me to.

[ - ] Fascinus 1 point 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 13:23:09 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks for the lead :)

I know exactly what you mean about the tax stuff. Used to be libertarian in my younger days and, during that time, I heard many libertarian candidates casually mentioning not filing taxes for an extended duration.

I recall my astonishment upon finding copies of actual returns posted online where folks had managed to pay no federal income tax. Felt like a Bigfoot sighting :)

Aloidal title? I think the government got rid of those.

[ - ] SilentByAssociation 1 point 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 15:57:46 ago (+1/-0)

Whatever kind of title it is, most people interested in the subject will say that you only own your home through color of title. Land cannot be taken for debt or taxes, but Real Estate can be taken.

The continuing theme I hear in these discussions is status correction.

Yep. She’s a loser.

[ - ] JoesLegHair 1 point 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 15:45:02 ago (+1/-0)

If she set aside the extra $450/month she would be able to afford the maintenance that would come with a house that you could get with a $950/month mortgage.

*At least if it isn't a town with super high property taxes.

[ - ] Jinglebanger 1 point 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 16:13:56 ago (+1/-0)

So as a construction contractor, do I get a better deal on my home loan as I am able to provide my own maintenance at cost?

[ - ] totes_magotes 0 points 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 16:38:31 ago (+0/-0)

Imagine being so stupid that you still don't understand the difference between ownership and renting even when it's spelled out.

[ - ] Rowdybme 2 points 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 11:25:11 ago (+2/-0)

This must be old. Cuz that mortgage and that rent doesn't exist anymore.

[ - ] MrHarryReems 0 points 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 18:08:52 ago (+0/-0)

That's right about what my mortgage is. I bought at a super low interest rate before the boom and make double payments.

[ - ] Rowdybme 0 points 1.7 yearsAug 16, 2023 10:12:01 ago (+0/-0)

Yeah I forgot about old mortgages. New ones. Nope. My daughters just got a 2 bedroom apartment in the dfw area and it's 1800 bucks a month. Gen z is hosed when it comes to buying homes.

[ - ] RedBarchetta 2 points 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 10:18:57 ago (+2/-0)

MAYBE, it is because you are so good with the rest of your money? Im betting she holds at least three credit cards, all are maxed out and late.

[ - ] TheNoticing 1 point 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 12:02:58 ago (+1/-0)

(((banks))) (((usury)))

The reality here is not that she can't afford the $950; it's that her credit history shows a number of late payments which removes her from consideration. Unfortunately, a lot of people think that because they _eventually_ paid the balance they owe, the problem just went away.

[ - ] Indoctrinated_USA 1 point 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 06:02:51 ago (+1/-0)

That's the downside to having low-skilled, low-paying employment, little education, and a middling payment history.
When you ask to borrow real money, no one wants to lend it.
So... You're stuck paying too much for too little.

[ - ] TheNoticing 1 point 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 12:06:43 ago (+1/-0)

Not everybody is cut out for school. Former manager of the building where I had my first security job went from an operating engineer, to chief, to building manager, to something higher, can't remember what, and I'm sure I missed at least 1 step in his career. His last salary for the year was $1.5 mil; he dropped out of high school to support his family.

[ - ] Indoctrinated_USA 0 points 1.7 yearsAug 16, 2023 15:18:38 ago (+0/-0)*

Stop pretending the exception is the rule.
'Not everyone is cut out for school' Lets break that statement down, okay?
School is simply human training, be it vocational or advanced cognitive development, i.e. traditional higher education.
Not everyone has the capability to excel in advanced mathematics, certainly.
Perhaps not everyone has the fortitude to be a physician.
But in the end, if the claim is a human cannot be readily trained, then they are supposed to suffer and fail.
Not receive a low cost mortgage.
We're not supposed to lower societies expectations to accommodate them, they are supposed to live impoverished and die.
There are supposed to be consequences for not preparing for life, fault be damned.
The boomers removed those consequences, now people in their late 20's are kids and every girl deserves a hoe phase.
The fact is, in many ways, it is always more expensive to be poor than it is to be rich.
That is what this meme is illustrating.

Good. Not everyone can or should own a home.

Source: the whiny little cunts of the early 2000's that screamed and wailed "da banks stole muh house!".

They didn't steal them, YOU DIDN'T PAY LIKE YOU SAID YOU WOULD.

[ - ] Shotinthedark 0 points 1.7 yearsAug 15, 2023 19:08:22 ago (+0/-0)

The mortgage isn't the issue, the down payment is what gets you
