I found out my grandfather was in the battle of Iwo Jima and Guam, where do I find more info?

I guess he saw the other marines raising the flag at Iwo Jima. He never spoke to anyone about the war so I don't have much info. I have his dog tags (issued in early ww2) and a few other trinkets. There is a bar with one star on it.

I know Guam was real bad and I have his wrist band, inscribed Guam 1942. I didn't realize he was in iwo Jima until recently but I guess one of my relatives has a letter that gets into it.

The photo was staged, the initial raising of the flag was not.

It was half a fuck you to the Japs and if I remember right also half a "Dear sailors and airmen, stop blowing the shit out of this mountain, it is now US property, thanks!" kind of thing.

All good. He fought for a different America in a different time. I know he was in some bloody battles, and they messed him up in a lot of ways. He was the toughest man I have ever met. Maybe it was an unnecessary battle against an unfit enemy, that could be too.
