I'm old; my dad fought "Japs" in the Pacific, my uncle fought Germans in Germany. Neither ever mentioned a "Holocaust", and I went through school never hearing of it.

Among acquaintances my age, the consensus is that there wasn't a "Holocaust" mentioned until around 1967.

I've got a recording of someone in my family recounting his entire life. Someone that happened to fight in WWII on the German side and being captured in 1945 around a day before the war ended and then being kept as a Russian prisoner for years.

He tells how he once visited the Auschwitz "concentration camp" around 1945 and commented that it wasn't actually "used". It was the kind of thing they kept around for inspections, so everything was spot clean everywhere.

Also said that Germany still had enough food reserves to support the entire country for at least two years by the time the war ended.

His recounting of the Russian prison camp sounds worse than what people make up about German camps. According to him even the Russian soldiers only were there because they fucked up and no one bothered with the communism nonsense. Piss would freeze before it could hit the ground and they had no beds or blankets.

Looking up the term holocaust prior to the late 60's or early 70's isn't going to turn up anything because that term wasn't used popularly enough before then. The absence of it doesn't prove or disprove anything unfortunately.

You can look up old newspapers and find bullshit propaganda articles about jews and camps etc from the early 1940's.

You can find even more bullshit propaganda articles in old newspapers during the first World War about Germans exterminating jews and babies etc.

Is final solution mentioned in encyclopedias from that time period? What do the encyclopedias say about Hitler from those time periods before 1970?
