In the late 70s I work at a US installation on a remote tropical island. "Vendors" sold hair combs and comb-like things for womens hair made from polished turtle shell. One of our guys was going on his annual leave, bought $1000 worth of the combs and said he could sell them for $10K in the states. When he arrived in the US they were seized by customs. 6 months later he got them in the mail from Customs with a letter that after testing they were found to be made of plastic. "Combman" never lived it down.

Anyone understands the point of the endangered species thing? What does it matter if some species go extinct? Extinction is a natural part of evolution. Fighting it has always been a head scratcher for me.
