I wouldn't say stupid, a lot of these larger companies have a White person in the front, and their back office is filled with diversity hires. It's one of the reasons I'm very distrusting of all the financial instruments out there. Really you are being forced to be "austere" to enrich some rich bankers, on the possibility that the accrued money saved won't be stolen from you later. How many times have the IRA, Pension plan rules changed to the point having one has rapidly become useless?

A lot of companies also have auto incrementing contribution plans that you have to opt out, usually in the most painful, confusing way. My wife's company has a 22% contribution rate to a retirement plan. The stock market must be up shit's creek if they are going to THOSE lengths
