I wonder how much of this was caused by panic. I have to imagine that if their drug cocktail failed, it could have gotten very ugly. I mean, imagine you're standing over someone who you are expected to help die peacefully, but instead you've poisoned them without killing them - in fact, the chances are quite good that the woman was in the process of suffocating due to the initial screw-up. The nurses saw what was happening and just accelerated the process manually.
A total fuck up. There's probably a lawsuit looming, which could actually help quell the advance of this stuff in the short-term. Death is an ugly thing; maybe less people will want to be the ones with legal responsibility to make an ugly thing peaceful.
That said, it's a sorry thing even when it is 'done right'. I have strong beliefs against euthanasia, but I find it is a very, very difficult topic to weigh in on, if you aren't an egotistical psychopath. I find it really hard, the though of telling a terminally ill patient, who is in pain and facing the prospect of either a painful or an ostensibly painless death, that they must live because of my beliefs (even as I stand here in good health). I have a mind not to deny people the right to euthanasia since I just can't bring myself to enforce the belief that my life is not my own on other people.
You're a better man than others. I also agree with you. Why force someone terminally ill, and their friends and family, to suffer watching that person wither away? That itself is cruel.
You are moral because you were created in the image of God. You don't have to know how gravity works to use it, and it is the same with all of God's creation including you and your morality.
