Non-profit Video Rental Store

submitted by Trope to AskUpgoat 1.8 yearsSep 19, 2023 08:21:36 ago (+4/-1)     (AskUpgoat)

One of the ideas I’ve had in the back of mind for many years has been building a physical video rental store as a non-profit. I often miss the idea of being able to go to a store and pick out ANY movie from any year. We had a nice one in town that closed down. Was awesome being able to rent movies from the 80s and 90s and take our time browsing as a part of an evening.

I wouldn't run it full-time but I have an old friend who would happily manage such a project.. Perhaps it could sell coffee and snacks as well to help fund itself. I’ve built a legal commercial kitchen before. Throw in some vending machines.

Modern streaming services have limited selections whereas back in the day, the right store could house the largest selection possible.

Another idea is a DVD vending machine that focuses on horror films.

Thoughts? Please chime in with your 2 bucks. (Adjusted for inflation)

I don't really have anything to add.
I just wanted to say thank you for being the trigger to those memories of browsing in a video rental store as a child, what an unexpected hit of nostalgia.

Same, our local store was in a neighbor's basement, walls full of beta & vhs tapes, some atari games too. Now I'm nostalgic for the 80s...

hm... what comes to mind here is like a "rentable living-room"

a bit like the Japs do for karaoke.

you rent a room with awesome TV and Sound, you order food and drinks, and just spend the day/evening with friends chilling and watching old movies from a HUGE Database.

You dont even need physical copies of the movies, although a central hub where the Groups meet and browse sounds very... "communal" quite nice.

And one room over, you can test the newest VR-Headsets with omnidirectional movement.

In the 2000s, we had a 24-hour gaming cafe. That was a weird place to be at 1am but that’s what happens when you finish high school without a plan for college.

I am keen on physical copies and patrons leaving to return to their domiciles to watch the movies,

I believe what you're describing would work well in a city assuming it wasn't overrun by homeless people and zuggers.

Sounds like a bad idea. Now red box for porn is a great idea- call it pink box.

We use to go to a place called "Hollywood Nights" when I was a kid. Mom and Pop place, they had everything. My brother and I absolutely wore out their copy of Army of Darkness. At the counter they had awesome snacks, but you could also get pogs and slammers. This was just before blockbuster video really got big. I think there was like a 75¢ charge if you didn't rewind the tape, it used to piss my dad all the way off. Good times.

Take a look at modern small book stores. They're all losing money.

Sounds like a money and time pit. If you're going to take on a big project, why not do something actually useful?

You’ve made a fair point and directing my efforts to something more useful is perhaps the strongest point in this post.

Glad to hear it.

What exactly would you rent, and how would you turn that into watching a movie? Would you have antique video players for rent so you could watch the movies?

You're just being nostalgic. While I too miss the old communal days of going to the local mall and playing video games at the arcade, browsing the toy shop, and giggling at Spencer's,the simple fact these businesses aren't around today shows they're not really viable. You're also basing your business around Hollywood product. And that's just going to cost you as well as basically dealing in jew propaganda.

And they already have DVD vending machines that rent movies so that's another reason a store wouldn't work.

Yeah,it's all just a cover for the real problem. Which is no one wants to be around other people anymore. We're all scared someone's going to call the cops on us or be attacked by some nut. Because we know more truth than we care to admit because if the wrong people knew we knew,we'd be dead.

I'd suggest putting a small theater indoor or outdoors and play old movies you don't need the rights too don't charge leave a tip jar theme nights etc. Sell coffee snacks like you mentioned.

I have a truck camper I want to set up a nice projector to have movies out under the stars when the weather is right
