As odd as it may seem, these dogs are from an area called Pomerania. Yes, really.
And it's an area of Germany. This is a German dog.
It gets weirder: Apparently these dogs are actually very intelligent. Not quite German Shepherd intelligent, but intelligent enough to be easily trained and rank 23rd being of "excellent working and obedience". (Ya ya plenty of folks out here will bash the "obedience" thing, but it is a quality you want in dogs.)
I used to shit on the idea of owning one of these, but I'm warming up to it because I think they're just cute as all get out.
Anyone have any real world experience with them and can share info / stories?
I am biased because I've grown up my whole life around pomeranians, but I think they are some of the best dogs. They are definitely intelligent and take well to training. I've had a couple of them that knew how to manipulate the other dogs into going outside so they can get all the attention in the room or beg for snacks. If you punish them as a pack for bad behavior, they tend to start helping to enforce good behavior, ie, getting their buddies to go outside rather than pee on the floor because they don't want to be punished for it. And they live a long time. I had one that lived for almost 20 years.
They are also a very affectionate, loving breed, basically living teddy bears, excellent emotional support doggies; they're great with kids. They can be aggressive with each other sometimes in a pack-organizing way or in a defending-their-spot-on-your-lap-from-the-other-dogs sort of way. They don't tend to direct their aggression towards people. They are also good guard dogs in that if anyone gets close to your property, they'll let you know. They can be a little yappy in that they'll bark at odd sounds, but you'll run into that with any dog that has a drive to alert their pack of things.
edit: To give a little further insight, they were bred down in size over the centuries. They were originally hunting dogs.

I house sit for a friend that has a half breed. I don't remember what the other half is. It's incredibly smart, just make sure to secure your garbage cans as they will 100% knock it over and start going through it the moment they think they're alone.
