Everyone should get a thermal camera. You learn so much about the world and heat lingering in things. You can pick up the heat minutes later from a hand put on a table for a few seconds.
Subsonic rounds can look like that. Used to shoot an MP5SD with integral can. You could follow the rounds by eye as they went down range under right conditions.
9x39mm, works for up to 200m reliably well. Its a slug with a penetrator inside. Anything not armored will get punched by inertial energy transfer and get knocked. Basic AP 9x39mm penetrates common plates and helmets. US just catched up with that with the .300 BLK and 8.6mm.
Russia uses plenty of natively suppressed 9x39mm, but only in Spetznaz or spec ops. Americans believe all of their guns are like the shit they send to them, so they built up a culture of believing all 9x39mm is shit and inferior to their guns; which is a half-truth, since all Russian squads actively using them are more lethal than their peers in America, at least when the gun caliber is considered.

We were ambushed and I gave four guys the good news, and that was when I discovered that:
1) The residual heat signature of an RPG or a PK barrel from being fired makes for an exellent target indicator on thermal, and,
2) Fluids leaving the human body are still at about 98.6F. They splash a bit, and then, depending on the ambient temp, cool rapidly.
Nobody had ever told me that second one, and it's not in any of the manuals.
You see it and then you think, "Oh. Okay. Well, that makes sense then."
