About an hour ago a White guy from our neighborhood rang our doorbell. He tells me that he doesn't have his son for Halloween, so he is taking him around the neighborhood tonight. His son, dressed as Scooby-Doo is roughly the same age as my middle child.
Lucky for them, my wife chose to get Halloween candy a week ago. I grab the bag and my wife asks who was at the door. Told her the scenario and she seemed annoyed that someone would trick-or-treat on an unofficial day.
The kid ended up grabbing two Twizzelers and gave me a grin. Dad was grateful and shook my hand.
Maybe its just a guy or dad thing...good on him for trying to make fun memories with his son. Shoe on the other foot, I surely would not want some bitchy response while trying to do something special for my kids.
Women are enforcers of social order. If society is fucked up, so are women. It takes a man in charge of her to put her in her place when the rules need to be bent.
I've been out of my kid's lives entirely for 7 years. Her dad is good friends with the head judge in San Diego county. I have no criminal record of any kind.
First thing I thought of. Next door neighbor is three years into his divorce now. Ex keeps asking for more time, more money...demanding certain days, etc. He either capitulates, or continues to go to court. It's been a huge lesson.
OP clearly did the right thing and had the right attitude, but it's still a weird move from the dad for assuming a bunch of strangers will be prepared and accommodating. Probably would have been better to go to some sort of pumpkin patch in the area that had a maze and hayrides and stuff. Some of them have hay pyramids for climbing and corn pits and other activities for little kids. A lot of the little kids wear their costumes to those before Halloween.

I was going to say something along the lines of giving neigbors a heads up before he swung by with the kid but then I remebered who we were talking about.
Next year Bobs wife is going to be ready for the kid with a special goodie bag and then get mad the kid didnt show up early.
A big risk to take, but he's doing what he feels is right by his son. I hope the rest of the houses they visited were just as good if not better. What a guy.
The bag the kid had was a bit smaller than the plastic pumpkin, but it was almost half full. Our neighborhood is mostly older retired people...but almost all are White. Not sure how many houses they have stopped at, but there's maybe 50 homes right now.
Man, that’s a good dad, trying to do everything to make it all good for the kid. Sadly, the kid will reflect on this strange thing of having to trick-or-treat without all the other kids around, but hopefully he will cherish the memory of his dad doing the right thing rather than see the negative other truths about the whole scenario.
The hardware store in town started selling those pull-start lawnmower engine go-karts and minibikes one year about 1969-70.
That's pretty much how our big fenced pasture on the other side of the road from the house got to be the unofficial go-kart/ minibike track for all the kids in our area when I was just a sprout.
Mom: "Is it safe?" Dad: "Sure. The fence will stop him. Probably." So, as a nod to safety, Dad put big stacks of hay bales in the corners of the turns.
One kid turned into two, then two into four, and so on. And that was it. No charge. Just park by the road on a Saturday and run what ya brung. You could ride by yourself, but where's the fun in that?
Moms would bring picnic lunches and talk, and Dads would sit on the tailgates, drink beer and talk , and watch the "race" (which never really started or stopped, just kept going in a circle) so there was an audience/cheering section. The Mom's made it social and the Dad's kept it more or less organized and maybe not "OSHA" safe, but safe-ish.
If there were any mechanical problems there were more than enough Dad's and tools to get it sorted out and back on the track in no time.
And we'd just keep making circles in the dirt until the gas ran out (thems what had gave to thems what hadn't because it's more fun that way). Some of my best memories from childhood.
There were more than a few "Dad Races" (alcohol may have been involved) which were always fun.
Women want their sons circumcised if all the other kids are circumcised or if their dad is circumcised. One or the other. Rarely does what's best for the child enter into it.

I lost my eldest two to the corrupt anti male family court.
I was lucky enough to get a second chance and had three more girls.
